I made sushi for the first time last night and thought I'd share some pictures.

This is my first ever roll, a cucumber roll.

This is me creating my second roll, an inside-out tuna-avocado roll.

These are the the finished products!

From top-left to bottom right:
Cucumber roll, tuna nigiri, tuna-avocado roll, carrot-cucumber-avocado roll, tuna-cucumber-avocado roll, spicy tuna-avocado maki, tuna sashimi, pickled ginger.

While not the best presentation (the trick is using the right amount of rice and spreading it evenly) it tasted fantastic. It was a lot of work, especially all the preparation for the rice, but a lot of fun too.

WE have sushi places here that we sometimes go to for lunch.
If I eat sushi for lunch on a night that I teach, I'm not hungry until AFTER class. Otherwise, I have to have a protein snack either right before class or during the break.

Nice.

Will you come make sushi at my house? I've done it before. It was good but time consuming. We returned to our favorite sushi chef.

Awesome! We have rolled our own also. Pretty easy, tastes good, and is fun to do. We are lucky to have a nice fish market in town that sells sushi grade tuna and salmon.

Oh, it's so fun to make sushi! I took a class at a local cooking school, we made lots of kinds, and gave us rolling mats to take home. My son (7) asks me pretty often, "Mom! Can we make sushi for dinner?" Unforutnately, he usually asks about 20 minutes before dinner time, and it takes too long. But maybe tonight!! (His job is to fan the race, but he really likes to get his hands wet and help spread it onto the seaweed).

Thanks all. It is time consuming but it's definitely a lot of fun. For those who asked, sure I'd love to come to your house and roll some sushi. Better yet, you come to my house and I will roll you some sushi .

Mr. Kaiser, I aspire to your rolling technique. OT: the windows in your place look *exactly* like the windows in the first place we lived in (West) Germany when my dad was stationed there. I was little enough to sit up on those kind of windowsills where I'd sit and wait for my dad to get home from the base every night (we lived "on the economy" - meaning off base).

As for the kitchen, we were lucky enough to be able to customize our house as it was being built and add the touches we wanted. The kitchen was a big deal. It's usually a disaster, sushi making or not. If you look closely you'll see all kinds of kid's stuff up on the counter (toy cars, sippy cups, even a bottle of Elmer's glue). We have a nice house but it is ALWAYS trashed since having two kids.

Wow, great job, Dougie Fresh!

I am too lazy to make a roll... I just put all kinds of cut fish pieces and veggies, nori and sushi rice on a plate. Mommy's job is done. And everybody makes his/her own hand roll (like ice cream cone).

We often see our cat doing the same thing. Since there is essentially 0 variety in Germany, those are the same windows in every home here. Maybe a little strong, but close. Those heavy duty blinds are hard to beat. You can bring midnight to noon by closing them all.

I do it the deconstructed bowl way and call it chirashi if I'm inspired enough to do this at home.
