We (the entire Mud family) are on vacation & I got to do my favourite trail ever. I have hiked it several times in past years...usually with a big pack loaded with backcountry camp gear (Mrs Mud & I would do a bit of climbing back then....before kids), but this was the first time I would get to do al-fresco...just my trail runners, a minimal amount of back-up gear (mountain weather being what it is), & small hydration pack.
We are vacationing in Whistler, so the family & I took the gondola to the top of the mountain (no shame here) & we enjoyed a pcnic lunch after a 1 hour hike at the peak. When we got to the turn off for the trailhead, we said a quick goodbye & I was off while they made a 40 minute loop back to the gondola.
The trail is a alpine single track that courses over three peaks...Flute, Piccollo, & Oboe (that portion of the trail is appropriately named "the Musical Bumps"....before dropping down to Singing Pass to follow the edge of the Fitzimmons Valley & back into Whistler Village.
The total distance was about 21km (13 miles) but it drops 5700' in elevation (starting at about 7500'). In the past (pack-laden), it would take about 6 hours to cover. Since I didn't know what the snow fields would be like, I told Mrs Mud to expect that it would take about 4 hours.
The snow was limited to the first 1km, so I managed to have a very straigtforward run....although I did come across a mother bear (black bear) with 3 cubs (normally they only have 2) in the lower alpine meadows...I was back at the condo under 2 hours.
The views were spectacular!!!

Here are some pics.

This frst pic was taken at the trail junction with Mrs Mud's camera.

This is the typical condition of the trail & the views...Russet Peak & Overlord in the left distance (a favourite climb)

Singing Pass...the trail junction to teh Fitzimmons Valley. 1/2 was there.

When I first saw the thread, I thought you'd post about the trail that the S.T.O.R.M.Y. follows.

We're about 30 miles north of Squamish (site of S.T.O.R.M.Y.)...you'd have a heyday 'round here!

Flounder....the DW can hang out at the spa. There's something for everyone!

dg1...I count myself very lucky.

Truth is Whistler is an awesome playground. Tha vacation has (so far) included skateboarding, x-country mountainbiking, zip-lines, swimming, luge (on wheels), rock climbing, & lots of good food. I hope to get up the mountain for some full-on downhill riding in the next couple of days & if the weather holds, I'm going to try to run the valley between Back Tusk & Lake Garibaldi.
