Help! After my 50K at the end of December, it felt like I had irritated the outside of my big toe from all the rubbing or something during the race (it was a trail race and I never do those and my feet got wet and all that good stuff).

I was off of running for a week letting some tendon stuff go away and when I started back to running, this toe was still irritating me. I thought it would just go away, but it hasn't and it seems to be getting worse. When I'm running, the pain starts on the side part of my big toe that is callused (and has been for years) and then it moves until it feels like it's between where my toenail starts and the fleshy part just to the right of that; it kind of feels like an ingrown toenail from Hades. The pain subsides when I stop running.

Anybody got a clue on this one???

Hi Nettie! Once when I was clipping my toenails specifically the big toe, the nail had split under the skin which wasn't noticable at the time. After some running it got infected and I still couldn't see what was causing it. Went to the DOC and he wanted to pull the toenail off. I don't mind losing a toenail from running but having one pulled off? No way. I went home and using the sizzers from my fly tying kit and a needle, sterilized them and went to work at getting that sliver of toenail out while cutting it away from the toenail. It was buried deep and hurt alot while doing it, but I saved the toenail. It healed rapidly after that and I was able to run without pain the next day. Good luck with your toe. Larry
