Today was the Muddy Buddy. My friend Dawn and I did it, and we wore our custom made "Life is Short, Play Dirty!" tank tops. They were a hit! And boy were they dirty by the end!

The race is broken down into 5 legs, with an obstacle between each. You and your partner leap frog the whole way, switching from biking to running (or vice versa) at each obstacle. I opted to do the most running, and that meant I started off running. Our wave finally got going, and I was the slowest runner as usual. Off to the first obstacle, about 1.4 miles away. It was a wall you had to climb over, but luckily, they put little rock-climbing hand/foot hold things on it. I got over and couldn't find the bike!! I looked and looked, and the race officials were helping me look. Then I noticed Dawn had propped it up on a post (to make it easy to spot, ironically!), and off I went. The next leg had a big steep rocky hill to go over, so we all walked our bike up and down it. Then we zoomed off. Lots of people walked their bike up the gradual hill at the end of this leg, but not me, SUPERBIKEWOMAN, I just toughed it out in a high gear.

Dawn was waiting for me, so I handed off the bike. That leg seemed shorter, like maybe a mile or so. This obstacle was this contraption where you had to go over a bar, under one, and then climb up and over another one. Easy cheesy. I'm off and running. This next leg was a longer one I think, 1.5 miles. It also had us go thru the reservoir. Dawn and I walked thru together, she carrying the bike since it was her bike leg. Muddy, mushy, and wet. But the water felt good, nice and cooling. However, when we got out, our shoes were full of mud and pebbles. Oh well. Off we went.

The next obstacle was balance beams, so I hopped up and got across. Whee! I found the bike easily this time, and took off. Biking was such a rest from running, it was nice! This leg was maybe 1.2 miles or so. It went way too fast, since I wasn't looking forward to the last trek (running) of the race. But alas, all good things must come to an end. I passed Dawn while she was running and we shouted words of encouragement. I got to the obstacle and dropped the bike. This obstacle was a big blow up slide. You had to climb a rope ladder to get to the top, and then down you went. I have a teeny fear of heights, but there isn't much you can do about it other than trust you won't break your neck when you go sliding down. It was actually fun.

Last leg. I trudged along, pebbles in my shoes, sun burning down. I was hot and ready to be done. This leg seemed the longest, even tho it probably wasn't. I walked just a little up the last hill and then ran it on in. Dawn was waiting for me, and we ran together towards the final obstacle: the MUD PIT.

Let's just say that after about 1200 (or more) people have gone thru it, it was not so much water, and just stinky sludge. Mmmm.... Down on our hands and knees, in we went. We crawled along, laughing the whole way. The crowd was yelling "Get your butt down!" to those of us (me) who weren't belly crawling. So belly crawl I did. It was actually better, since your knees weren't getting so scratched up. We reached the end, crawled out, and ran across the finish line.

I don't yet know our time, but it doesn't really matter. We had a great time, got muddy, and got in a workout. Does it get any better than that?

Afterwards, we hopped in the res to get clean (as clean as we could, anyway). Then we hula-hooped to get a free water bottle, grabbed some fruit and headed home. After showering, it was all a fun memory.

Someone took a picture before the race in the shirts. It's not like you could see what they said after the race

They don't have pics or results up yet.

My DH usually goes and takes before/after pics, but we didn't have room in the vehicle for anything but us and our bike this year.

Now THAT sounds like fun!!! In this kind of event, it almost seems like finishing time is irrelevant compared to the finishing - congrats!
