AKA Scooby!

1. Why do you run?
It started when I was 5 years old. Our high school football team was playing a game at Youngstown State, so they went to practice on the astroturf field. Dad went to watch practice and took me with him. I saw a guy running and asked if I could "go do that." Ran down the stadium steps, ran a lap, ran back up the steps, and asked if I could "go do that again." I ended up running a mile that day, plus all my trips up and down the steps. I haven't stopped since. It's something I was always good at. It got me a scholarship. No other kind of exercise quite does it for my like running. That and it gives me a killer ass!

2. What is your greatest accomplishment?
Finishing my degree. I dropped out when I oops got pregnant. I was raising my son on my own, working full time, and going to school part time. But I did it.

3. What is your motto/theme song?
I don't really have one.

4. How do you deal with bad runs?
I don't "deal with them." I think they are just as important, if not more so, as good runs. They give you a mental toughness to push through, even when it hurts. So on race day, when you're at mile 10 of a HM, you know you've got what it takes to get to that finish line.

5. Do you reward yourself for good runs? How?
My reward is on race day. When I've put in the miles and I finish well.

6. Who do you admire most?
My great grandmother, Margaret, who died when I was 11. She raised two boys on her own after her husband left her. She worked full time, and she took in her father and her aunt as they aged. She was the kindest, most gentle woman in the world. Yet she had strong convictions that she would fight you tooth and nail to defend. If I'm ever lucky enough to have a daughter, she'll be name for her. (we'll call her Maggie) I wish I could have known her better.

7. What is the greatest advice you have ever received?
Find something you love to do, and figure out how to get paid for it. I've not really followed it, but it's stuck with me.

8. What do wish you had learned younger?
To love myself.

9. What do you wish you could do but can't?
Play piano. I've have ridiculously long fingers. I've been told on countless occassion that I have piano hands.

10. How would your friends describe your personality?
Goofy, loyal, and would do anything for the people I love.
11. What do you wear running? favorite outfit?
I just wear whatever. Shorts, t-shirts, sweatshirts. I'm too cheap for the good stuff.

12. What has been your favorite race?
Kentucky Derby half marathon - Previously I hadn't done any big city races. Little local ones here and there. There are bands along the way and crowds of people lining the entire course. Other runners surrounding you. It's amazing.

13. Do you have a goal race right now?
Depends on what happens with my knee. I would like to do the Derby half again this year, but I don't know if that's gonna work out. I'll just have to wait and see.

14. What makes you happy?
Watching my kids when they don't know I'm watching. I love seeing their imaginations at work, without them getting embarassed that mom's in the room.

15. Tell us one interesting thing about you that you haven't said (at least not often) on this forum in the past.
My dream from a very young age was to become a Barker Beauty. I used to walk around our house modeling the tv and the refridgerator to practice, just waiting for Bob to call. Alas, my dream is no more.

16. Tell us one interesting thing about another user of this forum that has not been posted (at least not often) on this forum in the past.
CrazyEye really does have a fucked up eye. But that's just because DanQ sucker punched her for saying Skyline sucks. No, really, she has what I described as a "leaky pupil." It's kinda cool actually.

Thanks for reading about me!

Hi MrsCoby!! Great POTD!

Mrscoby is one of the few PRTers I've actually met in real life, and she's absolutely adorable! She's got a smile that completely lights up a room - she's way too beautiful to be a Barker beauty, not nearly bland enough.

It's not too late to learn piano, you know. There are lots of adult self-teaching books and DVD's out there if you don't want to spring for lessons. And you can learn on an electronic keyboard, which isn't all that expensive of an item these days, so you don't need to buy a piano. I've always thought that as soon as my kids get a little bigger and I have more free time, I'd love to learn to play.

Thanks for sharing your story. It's always nice to hear from the real runners!

I totally think you could do it. It just takes practice. Being able to sit down at the piano and play a song is very rewarding. And I think it is relaxing.

Great POTD! I love that you have been running since age 5. Congratulations for going back to earn your degree. I work with college undergraduates, and can only imagine how challenging it must have been to balance everything.

Thanks! I hope your knee gets better so you can do what you love to do.
I also don't think I can read another of your posts without imagining you doing the barker arm presentation of it.
