Since the other one got so long, I figured I would start a new thread about Umstead.

So my prep for the 50 is going nicely, I am looking forward to seeing everyone there.
Hummus!

Remember last year we decided we needed more "real" food as crew? We'll have to work up a little menu as it gets closer. Stuff that is more sustaining than pretzels and M & M's but will keep well.

As for the OBX Marahon it's all in the landscape you're used to. The race is Southbound, on asphalt and dirt roads through some beautiful areas. There is one "hill" in mile 22 -- a bridge from Nags Head to Roanoke Island. I live ~30 miles from there and hills take the wind out of my sails (but am working on that as much as my flat surroundings allow).
Umstead was nice this morning... gorgeous, clear skies, temps on low-mid 40s... couldn't have been better...
I did "the loop" and some add-ons to get to my 15 and kept telling myself "ok, Ty, you just need to do this 4 times and you'll be all set"... 4 freakin times???? it still doesn't fit inside my head. Better find some brain room soon.

Nicole1650 is coming to crew too...suggestions of what she could bring?
Agreed! Or just plan a grocery run like G-bread and I did last year, but with a little more planning.

Edited to add: Especially if we are tracking more runners, we won't have the solid breaks in between pit stops.
I plan on bringing a ton of vegitarian and whole foods for those of you who want to partake. We also have a caravan of people coming up from Florida and my dad coming down from PA. I'll be more than happy to loan out crew members and a possible pacer if anyone needs one
If nothing else Jacksonville will give you a taste of flat and see how you do. I hoe you're the exception to the rule.

As for massage in general I can only stress the value of preventative massage. Sure when things go wrong massage is often a wonderful solution and in my personal opinion many times better than a Chiropractor. My MT after my Nth problem years back finally said, Why don't you come before the little problems manifest themselves into big problems. Like take care of the knots and stressed areas while they are little devils. The little bulb went off and I have been doing preventative for 15+ years with nary a problem and that includes over 50 ultra races.

Yes if costs a few bucks and not many if any HMO's cover this so your out of pocket. It's just a matter of how much you love to run and the sports personal value. I very often get a massage about a week before a significant race while in taper mode and then again after the race. It's almost as good as sex....almost but not quite .
Dude! And we totally went past a closer store that I remembered only after the trip But still. I agree, prior planning in this regard will be useful. I'll have a cooler or two, as well. I'll also bring bread and maybe a bigger knife for cutting?
Hi! I'm so excited to meet everyone.

This will be my first 50 and I'm very scared.

I will be staying with IEatHills4Meals. I think there's another Running Mom that will be there, but other than that, I'm coming by myself from Virginia.

Did I mention that I'm scared?
I also have two coolers I can bring, as well as any utensils. I have an apparatus you can use over a campfire to toast bread!

Oh wait, we can't make fires there, can we?
WE can make fires, but only in the pit and only if there is not a burning ban... our cancern last year was the size of the fire and the kids olaying with the fire!

Alemma- don't be scared... just got out and run your race. They are going to be plenty of people from KR there, so you'll have tons of people cheering you on. Where in VA do you live?
I think Nicole has a camping stove... I'll check with her.

Today I ran at Umstead and met Charles. He was running a 16 miler and struggling with ITBS... we chatted for about 2 miles. He is signed up to pace 12.5 miles overnight. It didn't occur to me to ask if he hangs out here... He was good company.
I just came back from 20 at Umstead. It couldn't have been better, almost too warm which I am sure everyone in the cooler states wants to hear. The temp was 58 degrees when I started at 10..... I couldn't get out of bed this morning. Starting on the 24th I will be running at 8 from the parking lot off Harrison Avenue. (Reedy Creek) Let me know if anyone is interested, I usually run the Turkey Creek Loop (10 miles) nice and slow - today was 3:40 for 20.

I meant to take a camera and will try to remember when I get back from Florida next weekend to get some pictures. Let me know if anyone needs anything or wants us to run down some information locally.

Not sure if fires will be allowed, we are in severe drought here in NC. It is going to take a great deal of rain between now and April for it to change I think...
Don't be too sure. I'm WAY out of training. I haven't gone more than 15 since my Masochist DNF, and haven't had a double digit length run since before X-mas! I'm going to try for a 3-4 hour run in about 10 days (Feb 21). My schedule hasn't allowed more anything more. I'm just trying to keep my streak of finishes alive, I'm 4 for 4 so far!

(sorry to hijack the thread)
Just noticed the picture link wasn't working. Here's another try...

http://picasaweb.google.com/ToxicRun...79091783741730
