Tonya- I can't wait to hear how it went. Thank you for doing the breast cancer walk, one of the receptionists in our office is currently battling the disease.

Ugh, not me. I didn't know it until a couple days later, but I think I ran the NYC Marathon last year with the flu. During the race, I couldn't figure out why I kept fading and fading. And then right after the race ended while I was in the humongous line of runners shuffling thru the finish corral, I felt like I was going to puke. That was one of the most unpleasant racing experiences that I've ever had...

But, uh, I'm sure you'll be fine, BigG...
Main goal this time: fun. But, time-wise I'll still go out at BQ pace and see what that feels like (3:45:xx) and see if I can hang on. Added bonus this year is I'm older, so 3:50:xx would qualify me for 2012. I have no idea if I'm in that kind of shape this time, so at any point I could just completely switch to survival/fun mode.

You're in Corral A, right? (Or whatever the name is for the one you need to qualify for). We went over this a while ago in the TCM thread, I think. I'm just too lazy to look it up.

I'm also planning on going for a 3:45, which would be a PR for me (although nowhere close to a BQ). I think I've trained well, and if the weather is nice, I'll hopefully have a shot. I've now run more marathons since my PR than I did before it. In these last 2.5 years, I suppose I could use various excuses for that, such as a broken ankle, a bout of swine flu, the diagnosis of my epilepsy, some nasty weather, and a couple of really hard marathon courses. I don't think I'll have any of those excuses this time. So if I can't get the PR, I might as well give up trying...

I'm in Corral 1. We should be right around eachother then for at least the first 1/2 of the race, or until one of us fades. I'm not a big talker when I'm running that fast or that far, so don't think I'm trying to be rude! I'll talk to you over beers, post-race. Decent chance I'll be wearing pink. Look for me.

Fun: running a 5K this weekend (Miles for Midwives) with Missy and Allie in attendance!!!

i'll also be "running" it - first race post baby at 6 weeks so not expecting anything but to finish!

Hey kids,

My exercise has consisted of moving our boxes of stuff from house to house, and we took SIL and BIL hiking up a mountain yesterday. I carried Claire on my shoulders about 90% of the way up for extra points.

The only nice thing about not running for a while is that my leg muscles are completely pain and fatigue free for the first time in a long while.

Evening all! Got out tonight for a dark and lightly rainy 6 miles. Man did it ever feel good too!

Then we should all be pretty close to each other. I actually have half a mind to start with the 3:40 pacer in an attempt to bank time before my inevitable collapse...

Anyhoo, tonight I did some kind of a speedwork thing. It was little a tempo/interval/fartlek hybrid. Maybe I just invented a new kind of run. All told, it was 6.6 miles at an avg 8:20 pace. Too much/fast this close to the marathon? Meh.

Did an easy 4.5 miles tonight. My DD ran the first two miles with me. It was her longest run ever and she rocked it in 21:06. She's doing great getting ready for her first 5K in December.

boB - I'm gonna try to do my own thing and NOT start out with the 3:40 pacer. I did that in 2008 and 2009 and when i just went back and looked at my runningahead log, those pacers were too fast for me - closer to 8:10 pace, with some miles even at 8:00ish. I don't want to blow up super early. I'll start behind the 3:40 pacer (Pacer - who is it, did you find out?) and do my own thing. I looked at numbers and the course today and I have a strategy.

Baggs - who are you pacing? And what's she gonna do from mile 23 on without you!?!

boB, you're excuse-o-meter is plum out. it's time to knock out a mother of a PR. and don't give up.

duck, what's this pain-free thing you're talking about? je ne comprends pas.
try to control your nutsoleenies

ailarie - you seem to be really killing the cross training these days. of course, i compare you to the x-training that i'm doing (that's a big ol' ZERO!). nice work!

spent my weekend on cape cod casting and casting my surf pole....but came up empty. had fun though and helped out the sales of several different beer brands. and i didn't get arrested. or hit on (we were in p-town). i only ran twice last week, once on the cape around race point/cape cod national seashore - really nice path/route. must have been a recovery week.

i flew into norfolk this evening and had pleasant memories of our little meet-up down here last november. i went out for a run after checking in and the skies just frickin opened up. i tried to run to Mount Trashmore but never made it. Mount Trashmore??? by the time i had just about gotten to it i had run just over 30 minutes in the pouring rain, on super busy roads with very few sidewalks, puddle jumping...and....well, i was done. in the dark, cars coming at me, i didn't have ID on me...

or lights

or reflectors

duh

yeah, one of the dumbest things i have done in a while. it actually was a good run and i was starving afterwards, but that was just kind of moronic.

i skimmed back a little bit and hey nice racing this past weekend.

lucky dogs going to TCM this weekend. go get 'em!!!

keep your head up solar!

cheers

I do, too. Sounds like a fun guys weekend, 2oh.

Maria - a surf rod or surf pole is a fishing rod that's sturdier/longer than a standard fishing rod. It's used for catching fish right off the beach -- stripers, bluefish, etc. It needs to be sturdier to withstand the fighting of the fish and the power of the surf, and longer to allow for long casts.

A surf rod. There's all kind of wrong with that. Even that it's used to catch strippers.
