I think one of my downfalls has been this 'slower' pace. I normally run easy at about 8:15-8:30, well, here lately on these long runs I have increased it to 9:00-9:20s and I have started having oddball pains in my hips and legs that I've never had EXCEPT for when I ran/walked that 11.5 mile race at my buddies pace (about 9.5-10.00) earlier this June. I don't think my body is used to that pace, and hasn't had enough time to adjust to it... or maybe I'm just pulling excuses out of my rear end to make up for what will probably be a horrible experience this Saturday.

It's a good excuse but not unfounded. It takes time to adapt to the additional pounding of a slower pace.

I could lie and say that the marathon is all sunshine and roses with bikini clad hotties at each the aid stations. Running a marathon is painful; however, it's as horrible as you make it. If you focus on the negative, it will be horrible. Be conservative early and focus on why you are doing it and, when it gets tough, think of how proud your son will be of his Dad. After the race, you'll soon forget the bad parts and remember you just ran a marathon! Then you'll start thinking that you could run faster next time...
