Good morning, TEAM LIT!

Dawg: Nicely done in moving on up the fitness chain!

TASM: Nicely done to you too for being and staying so consistent... and now with spinning!

Yoshi: Great job on the 20 miler.

Don: You'll come back around. This "down time" will probably prove good for you, since you've been hitting it hard for a long time now. So you'll probably get the mental break needed before hammering onward!

Weekend Recap...

Saturday: 15 mile run with a large group. Got away with wearing shorts. Loved it. Fun run. Social. Total time including stops for water was 2:01.

Sunday: 7+ mile trail run with three others in my favorite place to run trails. Some good climbs but otherwise conversational pace. At the end I tagged on 8 repeats of a very steep grassy hill that climbed, maybe, 200 or more feet at roughly 20% grade.

Monday: 4 mile tempo run in a slippery snow.

Great day, Friends!

This day in history:

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, the political and spiritual leader of the Indian independence movement, is assassinated in New Delhi by a Hindu fanatic.

Also, my older brother's 48th birthday!

Elliptical 1 hour

Weekend recap:

Saturday: 5k run around the lake with my niece who needed to talk and prefers that we do that during a run together. Love that about her. Was faster pace than my recent Thursday runs but I felt it more. I need to loose some weight to get rid of this labored feeling when I run. It is killing my spirit.

YoSake: Nice 20 miler. That distance is hard for me without any company.

Don: Know what you are feeling. Do what feels right. Hope the new job stuff is going well.

Thor: Favorite trail location? Looking for locations for our Saturday social trail run group. We've been to Maudsley, Winnikinni and looking at Pipestave. Other options would be great.

TASM: You're doing awesome!

Nice weekend of running, Thor!

I have been mostly a lurker here lately due to problems with posting, but it seems better now.

I'm mainly a runner who balances that with competing in another sport, family and work so always enjoy the posts here and get good ideas on balancing the training/life load.

I'm shooting for a late May marathon so this weekend was the first week of training:

12 miles in a snowstorm on Saturday - we haven't had much snow here and this was the perfect light, fluffy cushion with temps right around 30 - doesn't get any better than that!

6 icy trail miles yesterday - whoever came up with the idea to put hex screws on the bottom of your shoes was a genius :)

5.5 easy miles today with 30 minutes of yoga/strength after - I really let this slack last year so I am trying to get at least 3 days a week completed.

Thanks for letting me play here and looking forward to a great 2012 for training and racing!

My favorite set of trails are at Ward Reservation in Andover/North Andover. Ward is just off of Rt. 125. There are maps at the trail head, and the trails are actually fairly easy to get to know, unlike those at Harold Parker. These trails have some climbing to them, which is why I like them, but you are rewarded with a skyline view of Boston if the conditions are clear. We had that this weekend. Trails are mildly technical but less so than Harold Parker. I enjoy them for the elevation (not too much but enough to satisfy me) and for the fact that they are entirely runnable. You'll fall in love with the park after a few runs there. I promise.

Harold Parker has great trails, but these are technical, and you are bound to get lost. Not sure if there are maps at trail heads. But you can find maps online. I have run HP quite a bit and still get lost. I tend to stay away from HP during late fall into winter mainly because the folks I run with would rather keep the running less technical, and in fall and winter, HP trails can be a little too much.

Bradley Palmer is another awesome spot. I haven't run it enough to know the trails, but they can't be too hard to figure out, and I'm sure you can find a map at trail head. The entrance to BP is very near the Trifury bike route as it snakes through Topsfield. Trails here are fun and less technical.

The Merrimack River Trail is another good spot that is perhaps the least technical of all. Easy to learn since it is an out and back along the river.

Some great weekend reports!!!

Yesterday did a 26.5 mile ride - weather was beautiful and although the pace wasn't what I'd hoped, the hills were a good challenge. :)

Today - just under an hour on the trainer. Weights on tap for tonight, or swim if I can get motivated to go to the pool at 7:30pm when the swim team gets out.

5.7 mile run - about 7:38 pace, so not bad considering coldish and windy.

Nice weekend swims by DD. The 50 free was a smoking race ... girl in the lane next to her jumped the gun and started fractionally early (yes, she was DQ'd), but DD still managed to out touch her ... not bad for spotting her a couple of tenths :)

Looking at a Big East quad meet from this past October, she would have beaten a finisher or two from a D1 college program in a couple of events... not bad for an 8th grader :)

hawk!!!! Great to see you here! Welcome back :) Which May marathon are you considering? DH and I would love to come out to Ohio to do some trail racing this spring/summer.

reg - congrats to your DD! Smoking fast young girl. You might have told this before, but a strong swim blood within in your/DW's family tree?

6 miles on a slippery surface, in the dark too, due to being out of office all day. Legs felt amazingly light on the day after 20miles. Though I might have pulled hamstring a bit. Where is my tennis ball....

Nicely done!

DH is a bit under the weather & breathed oddly/moved around last night a lot. Had to resort to pseudoephedrine yesterday afternoon to try to get my head unstuffed. Both of these kept me from getting much sleep last night. Lots of rest, but maybe only an hour or two of sleep. Meh. This happens every now & then & I'm getting much better at rolling with it...somedays you just have to take what you can get (this happened the night before my last half-iron, not at all optimal but all was OK).

Went to early morning masters swim anyway since I was pretty much already awake. I was highly motivated to attend because this morning was the 1 hour swim & I wanted badly to see where I was at. Picked a pace I thought I could sustain & then really picked it up during the last 10 minutes. Managed (we think...there's some question with the timer's sheet) 3175y. So, plus the 25y to get back to the start & a 200y warm down, I got in 3400y total.

This evening, I hopped on the trainer for an hour, including 6x90sec >110rpm with 2 min recovery and 2x 5min Tabatas with 5 min recovery between (hard gear/high cadence (>85rpm) for 40 sec followed by a 20 sec recovery). These got my HR well into zone 4.

Thanks! No real swim ties. I was good as a young kid (6-9 or so), but that was more from a lot of time in the water and fast rotation ... never had good technique, never could do the fly, still can't flip turn to save my life :) I could hold my breath for a good long time underwater... so maybe she got that from me, because her turns and underwater pull-outs are a thing of beauty.

Didn't really have much of a chance to swim competitively (or recreationally) after age 9. I think I could have been good if I had coaching and a program to join, but my HS didn't have a team and there weren't Y/club teams around when I was growing up.

DW was a diver in HS for a bit, but never a swimmer.

25min of strength and core last night while G watched Curious George...the riveting life of a mama to a toddler.

Dang, of course, on a day I get call-outs, not only do I have a DOR, my combined work/class hours were so long I didn't even get to stop by. That'll teach me! Happily, only two more epic Mondays to go, and I'll be back to no excuses.

Congrats on having such an amazing fish, reg.
