<p>I am up and getting ready to run this morning.  Usually Mondays are rest days, but after 9 days of rest, it seems high time I get back out there.  My head cold is finally improving, but my stomach still isn't so happy.  Hopefully the body will cooperate with a few miles this morning.</p>

<p>Fun: DS's football banquet tonight.  He is pretty excited and I know it will be fun.</p>

<p>I went out and walked about 3 miles on the gravel road by my house.  There was some slipping and sliding as usual for me and this road, but the problem child ankle held up.  Either tonight or tomorrow, I plan to try a small run on the treadmill.  Hopefully the ankle is as ready as the mind is.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>I tell ya - having some light to pour into the windows when I take the dogs out in the morning is nice again, but it's going to suck tonight when it's dark before 6pm!  Evening runners - be extra careful tonight!</p>

<p>Good morning, everyone.  Congrats to <strong>Tim</strong>, <strong>Clare</strong> and <strong>Moon</strong> for the races this weekend! </p>
<p> </p>
<p><strong>Fort hose</strong> who missed it, I posted a bunch of pics from my daughter's little Warrior Dash-style race yesterday.  It was quite a thing to put little kids through.  But they all seemed to have fun. </p>
<p> </p>
<p><a href="http://www.bestrace.com/results/11/111106ED5.HTM" target="_blank">My 5k</a> was a success as well.  I came in 6th place out of 202 runners, which I believe is the best I've ever finished, percentage-wise.  I guess it was a slow crowd.  (Two guys under 20 minutes, three others under 21).  I like running against slow crowds.  <span><img alt="biggrin.gif" src="http://files.kickrunners.com/smilies/biggrin.gif" style="width:16px;height:16px;"></span>  But I still didn't get an AG award, since I was 4th in my AG.  Oh well...</p>

<p>I think I'll do another 5k next weekend also.  I'll be in CT visiting my family there, but I got an email from my old high school saying that they're putting on a 5k next Sunday.  So why not?  And they've got another kid's run, so DD can have some more fun.  She's really getting hooked on this.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Sooner or later, I'm gonna need to start doing longer distances again, especially if I plan on running a marathon in Phoenix in January.  I haven't reigstered yet, mainly because airfares are a little high right now and bing.com's airfare price predictor thinks that prices will be dropping.  Nonetheless, the race is 10 weeks away, and I've run more than 7 miles only once in the last two months...</p>

<p>Dunno what I'll do today.  I can't do anything too intense one day after a race, but I'll try to get in some easy miles.  First weekday after the time change, though, means that anything after work will be done in the dark.  Oh well...</p>

<p>Slept through my alarm so will have to put in 6 some other time today. Hope your parts/sicknesses get better, <strong>Ail and Mindi and Moe and KP and Duckie</strong> and who else??</p>

<p>So, I had a conversation with a friend last night about running in the dark or in the middle of the night (ala Ragnar Relay) or on bike paths before dawn, etc.  This friend got very quiet and told me that they felt that this was...and I quote: "irresponsible and dangerous".  "What if something happened to you when you could have just run in daylight hours and been <em>safe</em>?"</p>
<p> </p>
<p>I really didn't know what to say to that. I tried to explain with lights and precautions and people with you it really is pretty safe, but any activity has some risk and I surely was not going to eliminate every possible dark run due to that potential.  It frankly made me mad, but I'm not sure how to respond to it.  It caught me off guard--I've been around plenty of people who didn't understand running but no one ever called me "irresponsible" about it.</p>

<p>OK...off to go see the doc about my shoulder. Hopefully nothing serious.  Good vibes to all!</p>

<p>So my weekend. 5.9 at the voo run - it was great to see everyone and the beer was wonderful...and hey some older lady said I looked like a teenager </p>

<p>3.5 on Saturday morning followed by bootcamp....lots of lunges and squats.  My a$$ still hurts.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>I woke up on Sunday morning feeling like death warmed over. Yeah, I went out on Saturday but had half a turkey burger and 2 beers in 5 hrs.  Not exactly a bender.  When I got home I just felt off and fought throwing up all night.  When I woke up, I was congested, sick to my stomach in both unpleasant ways and sweaty/clammy.  Great.  So I ate breakfast and took some cold meds, pepto and advil.  I had convinced people to do the 10 miler so I couldn't NOT go right? Temp read 54 but upon arriving at the race site...yeah...THUMB OF GOD type of wind and no sun. It really felt like 38 to me. </p>

<p>I opted to go for a warm up before registering and started to feel a wee bit better during that.  I bit the bullet and paid my dues and decided to go out with a friend at 830s or so.  First mile was 818...?  Second 808.  At this point, we started to get into the hills and she said she was backing off the pace.  At this point i just said F it and started to race.  Everything was good until the straight away along the CTY rd (7.25) where you were bucking the 30MPW gusts for about a half mile.  This is a pretty small race (like 100 or so) so there weren't any big groups to tuck behind.  Mile 8 was like 818 or so and I was so exhausted by the time I got out of the headwind and close to exhaustion that I just fell apart the last 2 miles.  I took a sip of water at 8 and that was not a good idea as I fought vomiting until 9.5 where DH picked me up and ran me in at 830s..boo.  I was 25 seconds slower than my PR so if I hadn't had melt down,</p>
<p>Oh well, I went home and basically whined all day about the hot and cold flashes and how sick I was feeling. </p>

<p>I do feel better today though.  9+ hrs of sleep does that to a girl </p>

<p><strong>Crane, </strong> if I only ran during daylight hours, I would not be able to run in the winter during the work week.  Period.  At least if I wanted to keep working.  There is nothing irresponsible and dangerous about running in the dark if you are dressed appropriately and run on a safe route.  The same dangers exist during the daylight as they do the night.  As a runner, you prepare and take precautions.  Grr.  I hate people that constantly judge runners.  It is like the people that constantly say marathoning is so bad for your health. Or that they can't run because they have bad knees.  Boo.</p>

<p>On the upside, I ran 5 easy lovely miles this morning.  It was 32 degrees and crisp and wonderful Fall.  I know we are supposed to have a brutally cold and snowy winter rolling in soon, and I fully appreciated the lovely running weather.</p>

<p>Good morning all!  Got out for a chill 6.9 miles this morning, really digging our lovely temps.  But my lower back was barking a bit, undoubtedly for the hours standing on a curb cheering on the marathoners, so I'll get to yoga tonight.</p>

<p><strong>Craney</strong> - I'd be mad/upset with that friend also, there are only so many hours in the day and if you're prepared what's the irresponsible part?  I could get hit by a crazy-ass driver at 1:00 p.m. on any given day; that's life.</p>

<p><br><strong>Bob</strong> - Oh yesh I forgot to comment about Miss Jillian's debut obstacle course!  Very cool, indeed!!!  She's a tough little thing!</p>

<p><strong>Cranie</strong> - I'll admit that I can see your friend's comment regarding the danger.  Not so much from road hazards, but more from being a victim of a personal attack, since you can see the path in front of you, but not what might lurk behind bushes or nearby trees.  However, that being said, I would also expect that there would be more than a few runners on that same stretch, so it isn't like you'd be out there 100% by yourself, right? <br><br>
The irresponsible bit, I think, comes from lack of knowledge as to how relay events are done.  A team knows where you should be, and if you don't show up within an estimated time, people would go looking.  Therefore, even if you did say, sprain an ankle - unable to even walk to the next checkpoint, (and didn't have your cell phone) it wouldn't be too long before someone came along to help.  It's not like you'd have to crawl your way back to civilization, or that the rest of the team would leave you behind, but the uneducated may not recognize that point.  </p>

<p>Morning, all.  I can't wait to hear more stories about races this weekend.  <strong>Brandy</strong>, <strong>boB</strong>, and <strong>Jillian</strong> seemed to have good showings.  I'm looking forward to hearing from <strong>Colleen</strong> and <strong>Tim</strong>!</p>

<p>Chiro this morning and then I have to get my butt in gear.  I don't have my lecture ready for tomorrow and I have to read a ton first.  I also need to write a letter of recommendation and answer a lot of panicked emails about papers due tomorrow.  The fun!</p>

<p>I spent some time landscaping yesterday, and though I feel a little creaky this morning, it's not too bad.  I worked hard for about 2.5 hours yesterday morning and then I did an easy couple of hours raking in the evening.  I also played for a little while at a gymnastics gym jumping on a trampoline, seeing if I could still balance on a balance beam and other fun stuff.  All in all, it wasn't a bad weekend.</p>

<p>One last day of working from home, although the kiddies DO have school today.  There are a few surrounding school districts that are still out.Working from home because I had a Dr. appointment this morning.  I have had a rash on the back of my legs on and off for a few months, so I set up an appointment with a dermatologist. Figured it was eczema or something.  When you are at a doctors office, you never want to hear things like "hey check this out, you see that pattern, have you ever seen that".  So a biopsy and 4 stitches later, I still do not know what is going on.  The doc figures it is either an allergic reaction (although some reservations about that), or some type of skin disease.  He does NOT think it is anything serious, but does not want to just treat it topically and then have no idea what caused it, whether it will re-occur, etc.  So, due to 4 stitches on the back of my left knee, tomorrow is an unplanned rest day (maybe - I have been on a good roll for 6 weeks, just came off of a planned step back week, do not want to lose momentum).</p>

<p>The outside nighttime running thing - you ARE responsible - you plan where you are going, wear appropriate safety gear, etc.   I rarely run in the dark at home, because there are no streetlights here.  But I will run before sunrise at work where there are sidewalks, streetlights, good sight lines for me and motorists, etc.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Got out for a nice 5 miler this morning before the doc.  I spent all day yesterday cutting up downed trees. Just about done with the front yard, will be tackling the back next weekend, and running all of the branches and brush through the chipper Fargo-style.  One nice thing about the clock change was that I felt no guilt about watching the Giants yesterday - stopped yardwork at 4, took a shower, and plopped in front of the TV.  It was dark out   And using a chainsaw after dark would be "irresponsible and dangerous".</p>

<p><strong>boB</strong> mentioned Anton Ohno at the NYC Marathon yesterday.  Mark Messier also ran it, and finished in 4:14.  He ended up in the medical tent for an hour getting an IV afterwards.  Apparently his athletic intensity got the best of him, and he could not just "run", he had to race it.</p>

<p>Still sick.  I called and asked to reschedule my interview today because I've lost my voice. I'm very uncomfortable about rescheduling but I think it makes the most sense. I can barely talk and I still feel crappy, and there's not sense in going in when I don't feel like I can put my best foot forward.</p>

<p>RiL, my stomach's been off with this cold/whatever too.  I'm hungry, but nothing is appealing to me and when I do eat, I feel sick after.  I've pretty much eaten ramen noodles and canned chicken soup of the last 4 days.</p>

<p>I'm at work today but my coworkers would really like me to go home.  So would I, but I'm waiting for my doc to call me back....I don't want to get home only to have to come back this way to see her.</p>

<p>super fun and busy weekend hanging out with/cheering for our 30s friends at the NYCM. i really enjoyed getting to meet mrs. timr, clare, and mr. clare. what a great group of people.</p>

<p>what an incredible race for the winners, too. the level the elites are running at in which you HAVE to run sub 2:05 in order to even have a  fighting chance to make the podium in the top marathons these days is amazing. i mean, there were how many 2:03 performances this year alone?? mind boggling how fast humans can be. i was very inspired by the spirit and excitement of the marathon and hope to be there next year.</p>

<p>i have all week off from clinic due to election and veteran's day (although i work a 24 hr shift fri night) so i have tons of time with AK. gotta figure some things out - thankfully, the weather is supposed to be gorgeous so we'll do some hiking and playing outside.</p>

<p>I have a face-off picture from Joe Louis Arena that I took of Messier and Yzerman hanging in my office here at work.  I find it hard to believe that I can limp through a marathon with two torn tendons in my ankle 25 minutes faster than an all-time great like MM!   Goes to show you how much preparation and knowledge can help counteract athleticism in the marathon.  </p>

<p><strong>Moe</strong> - we must have had the same thing going on.  Last Thursday and Friday, all I could stomach was ramen noodles, tea and water.  Bleh.  My advice is to give yourself some rest.  You sound like you were in the boat I was Friday.  I had barely no voice and just felt run over by a mack truck.  I was in bed for 16 hours starting at 7:00.  I was uncomfortable and miserable, but after that I did start turning a corner.  I am no where near 100% yet, but I am also no where near the hurt locker I was late last week.  I hope you feel better soon.</p>

<p>Oh, I know one thing.  I was reading an article about how now there are more than 49 million americans in poverty (meaning a family of 4 has an income under $22K).  That is very sad and scary. </p>

<p>Hi all - oof!  My quads are feeling it today, and no wonder - I calculated the figures from that mile 9-10 (really, 10.25) descent and it worked out to a 16.7% downhill grade.  I think I'd be more in a world of hurt now if I hadn't been doing all the strength training I have of late.  I remember some big guy came thundering down that slope past us slower types (big loping strides) and figured he was gone, but ended up catching and passing him before mile 12.  Also conversed with a 50+ dude (who was sporting a Pikes Peak Ascent tech tee) who nipped me by literally one second - we were both amazed by the gal in the pink sports bra who blazed down that hill.  Unlike the big dude, she was not going to be caught.</p>

<p>Got the results in - 44 out of 135 OA, with 82 of those males.  My time was about as median as you can get for my AG as well - 27 min on either side to the fastest/slowest times in my AG.</p>
