Morning Gang -

I dragged my hung-over butt out of bed at 5:45 and ran 3 miles. Mostly just to sweat all the alcohol out of me so I don't offend people sitting by me at a conference today.

Bob - hope you and your family are recovering from the accident. how scary!

What a challenging morning. I tossed and turned last night and got little sleep. On my way to the park I see it is 80 degrees at 5:55 am. About the 3/4 of a mile mark my body said "enough!". But I battled hard and finished. Today I ran 2 miles for the first time in over a year. Sad but true. At the end of this month I will be at the 3 mile mark. That will conclude step one of my comeback. Then hopefully I will begin step two which is the one hour runner program. I will shoot at the first of September for a starting date.

Oh - I need to ask you guys something regarding those little plastic bottles for fuel belts. Maybe it's just the heat, but it seems that once my water or gatorade sits in the bottles for an hour, then the liquid tastes and SMELLS like plastic. Yuck! I even bought new bottles, hoping that would be the solution, but no luck. Is this a common issue, and is there any solution? I've even waited until right before running to fill the bottles, and with nearly frozen (slushy) gatorade. Still in an hour (or less) yuck.

I wonder if it's an issue only with fuel belt bottles (as opposed to Amphipod). I'm in need of a replacement belt anyone (current one is too big now), and if switching to a different brand would help, now is the time. Thanks in advance for any feedback!

Good job, Maples!

Ailarie, those little bottles are really hard to keep clean. What about a scrubby brush with hard bristles? That way you could really scrub out the inside of the bottles. I realized yesterday that while my Amphipod bottle smells (and tastes) fine, the handle REEKS. I wash the whole thing every time I use it, but the handle is stinky. :(

I had a run like TimR's yesterday, except I was alone the whole time. I just kept getting slower and slower, had to walk a few times, and didn't even attempt to run up my big hill (self-defeating, anyone????). If you can believe it, I was even sweatier yesterday than last week (2 miles farther but a good 15 degrees cooler). When I got home, I texted GoV to let him know I made it back safe and sound... The text read, "I quit."

I reset my alarm clock last night for the right time but then didn't turn it ON. Sh!t. Barely made it to work on time. jeez. No time to pack a gym bag either so it looks like I'll run my 3 quick on my treadmill at home after work. No big deal. I'll keep it sleasy tho since I have 9 on tap for tomorrow and I'll really want to get those miles done early a.m. to beat some of the heat and humidity - if that's possible.

theia - What's weird, is the bottles don't smell all plastic-ish when they are at room temperature or cold. The problem is only when they heat up, I guess. I wash the buggers in the dishwasher (safe, according to the packaging), so I wouldn't think that it's an issue with bacteria or stuff clinging inside that shouldn't be. It's like the heat brings out an overpowering plastic smell/taste, if that makes sense. Bleck!

Though if Amphipod doesn't do that, I may be switching over. Are you outdoors for 2ish hours and with temps at least 80+ these days? (for variable comparison.)

Thanks!

Morning, kids. I tried to get out earlier today and run 5 miles. I was about 15-20 minutes earlier than normal. I guess snoozing for 45 minutes isn't very helpful. I was really done after 4 but since my house was a mile away, I did the best I could. I ended up walking up about .25 miles of the .75 mile-long incline at the end of the run. That's ok. It's supposed to be gross here this week, so I wanted to get my longest weekday run out of the way when it was 73* (76% humidity).

Good morning all - rest day today. A 5K on the TM plus some strengthening yesterday afternoon. Looking forward to a cutback week

Ailarie - for me, it all depends. Some of my plastic bottles get that way, others don't. FWIW, I've never had any issue with the Amphipod ones (can't vouch for the Fuel Belt models)

plastic bottles - I haven't noticed any differences in taste (Nathan bottles), but the temps aren't as warm over here. Does anyone know if the belts can be washed with the laundry? I am dripping with sweat after my long runs so I always wash my hat but haven't washed the belt. It gets pretty gross and I'm sure in a few months it'll be a little stinky, too.

DH is out of town so my morning group run didn't happen. Will have to get it in later this afternoon at the gym. Ick.

I've washed my Fuel Belt before and it shrunk a little but also caused the elastic to curl up a bit which seemed to create more chaffing opportunities. I'd recommend hand washing it and letting it air dry if possible. ;)
Sorry that your run was teh suck! I know what's it like. But try not to let it beat you down. I went to the YMCA last night and ran 5 miles on the indoor track. Much much better. 5 miles in 36:36. Made me feel like a real runner again. Yesterday's heat index hit 108. Today is going to 115!!!

I hate the stinky juice trail. It's no fun to run near at all. And this heat just cooks the stink right out of it. Yuck!!!

I haven't had this issue with my Nathan bottles. One think that you might try that works with camelbak bladders is to keep them in the freezer for a while. So, put the bottles in the freezer overnight or something, then pull them out, fill with ice and fluid and go run and see if that helps any.

Theia - when I was bonking like crazy this past weekend, I kept thinking that I didn't have this issue last summer or the summer before, something must be wonky. I've yet to go audit my log to look at paces vs temps, but I'll see what I find. One of my running buddies suggested that I go get some cocunut water and drink it. It will really help with dehydration and cramping. I got a bottle and I'm drinking it now. That $hit is expensive!!! We'll see hot it works. It has A LOT of potassium in it. Anyone have any experience with it?

Maples - way to stay with it! Keep going.

G'day. Well the humidity here keeps making every run look as if I just came out of the lake.

Went out for a longer run on Saturday. The start was miserable. 74 with almost 100% humidity. Yep, sucked. Kept it slower than normal, but managed to get through 16 miles. My calves got a bit twitchy towards the end of the run. So I called it at that point. I was thinking of 18.

Sunday I did the Twins Territory 4k. Basically a fun run with free Twins tickets. I did the race in 15:15 (about 6:02/mile). It was a much better result than last week's 5k. I put a race report on my site. http://minneapolis-i.com/personal-blog/

I was too flippin' tired to get up this morning for a run. Not looking forward to tonight's run in Florida-like weather.

I'm getting excited about that half this weekend. First real test of the year. I was thinking of not racing it and just running, but I'm going to race and just see what happens.
