1. Why do you run?
Because I love it. Initially, I didn't - it was thrown in as an afterthought to add variety to my aerobic workouts. As time went on, I figured out I had a passion for running that I never knew I had before.

2. What is your greatest accomplishment?
Getting my health back in order. Over 5 years ago, I weighed over 280 lb, was on two different high blood pressure meds, couldn't go up a flight of stairs without getting winded, and I'm sure pretty close to the edge of more serious stuff. Right now I'm literally half the man I used to be, off the meds, and feeling pretty great physically

3. What is your motto/theme song?
I don't really have one. Lots of little mottoes and songs yin & yang through my mind depending on life's events

4. How do you deal with bad runs?
They happen; you just move on. And without them, you could never appreciate the good runs.

5. Do you reward yourself for good runs? How?
The high you get after a good run is reward in itself.

6. Who do you admire most?
My parents. They have worked their asses off to give me and my five siblings the foundation and means to be successful in life, and I can't thank them enough for that.

7. What is the greatest advice you have ever received?
Not really advice, but more an observation - a good friend of mine told me no matter how much someone wounded or hurt me, I could never stay angry at them. This led to a broader realization that I shouldn't spend so much time dwelling on the negative stuff of life.

8. What do wish you had learned younger?
To like myself for who I am. I spent a lot of younger years wishing I was someone else, and that just made me miserable. Ironically, one of my best weekends ever led me to realize this - I met up with friends from a previous forum and vowed to be the life of the party that weekend. I did and had an incredibly fun & exhilarating time. On the plane flight home, however, I realized that just wasn't me, at least on a 24/7 basis

9. What do you wish you could do but can't?
Focus! Okay, I can focus in on something if I really try, but my brain's natural state is to shoot off on tangents without end.

10. How would your friends describe your personality?
Nice, easy-going, introspective and shy at first but I'll open up as you get to know me. I'm also very fair judgment-wise, willing to lend an ear and listen, and help out as needed.

11. What do you wear running? favorite outfit?
Basic stuff - tech shirt and running shorts. I love my Balega & Injinji socks, and I have a black pair of Brooks shorts that is actually a tad large for me now but always seems to be my choice at non-cold-weather races.

12. What has been your favorite race?
I'd say it's a tie between two 2007 races, the Flying Pig & Philly Marathon, because of all the truly wonderful Kickrunners I got to meet with at both events.

13. Do you have a goal race right now?
Provided I'm able to lick the injury bug I've got going now, I hope to do the Eugene HM in May and I'm hoping to do Niagara Falls in October. I'd also like to get in a few more triathlons, which is something I just got into last year and am really digging, including my first oly-distance attempt.

14. What makes you happy?
Seeing friends and family doing well. And getting in some good alone time (which is probably why running appeals to me so much.)

15. Tell us one interesting thing about you that you haven't said (at least not often) on this forum in the past.
I have a penchant for taking off on long road trips. Most recent one was a jaunt from my home in the Bay Area to old Route 66 in Arizona, around the San Francisco Mountains into Flagstaff, then down to Sedona, back up to Las Vegas, and back home. I've also gone into DC to explore the eastern end of US 50 in Ocean City via DC with side trips into Delaware and Baltimore (can you tell I'm something of a road geek?)

16. Tell us one interesting thing about another user of this forum that has not been posted (at least not often) on this forum in the past (make sure the other person will not object to posting the info!).
I have two things related to recent POTD poster Theia - one, I spent a weekend hanging out with one of her favorite comedians. Second, I've been made an unofficial member of the Theia family by earning a nickname from her mom (and I would rather run in a tutu than willingly reveal this one )

I always enjoy your race reports, Joe.

Congratulations on your weight loss and training accomplishments so far. I hope the injuries are behind you before too long.

I am envious of that Rt. 66 road trip!

I'm glad you like yourself now, because you are a really cool guy who deserves to be well-liked by everyone. I'm glad I got to meet you in Cincy and Philly.

You know, I've always thought it would be fun to pick one of the national highways (US 40, US 6, US 20, etc) and take a long road trip from start to end and just meander. Take a bunch of photos of things along the way, etc.

I just wanted to say that you and I have these two things in common.
I have a HARD time focusing on anything, (well, except running ),and I HAVE TO have alone time. Significant alone time. My husband COMPLETELY understands, and that's one reason why we are perfect together.

Great post, thank you for sharing! And thanks for the comments on my own POTD!

For those who haven't had the privilege of meeting Joe, he is one of those people who have an attitude or air about them that makes you want to be more like them. Just a tremendous way of looking at things and a truly kind, thoughtful soul with a zeal for life. I'm a better person for having had the privilege.

OK, Voodoo's comment just about made me cry because it's so true!!!

Moon, my dear friend,
Thank you for being you. I wish there were more like you in the world. Truly.

Was your life-of-the-party weekend the same one where you met one of my comedic idols? I'm guessing yes.

And folks, the nickname is a doozy! I think Moon is right; the tutu would be easier to live down!!!
