My dad called last week to let us know he had a few interviews lines up in the area and ask if he could stay again for 2 days. (If you missed by post about his last 3 day stay that lasted 10 days, I won't bore you with the details.) We let him know that the 2 days (through Friday) were fine, but we wouldn't be able to have him here over the weekend.

Naturally we found out on Friday that he had planned to stay until at least Monday (left provisions for his cat in Ohio) to find an apt if he got the job offer. And he did. So we let him pack his stuff up on Friday and he's now in a hotel. Philip and I had a lot of debate and guilt over the decision, but it's worked out.

Best of all, he was just here (using the internet) and made a joke about moving in next door, which was the perfect opportunity for me to set expectations about visit boundaries once he's in the area.

It's interesting to see that he expected to go from practically abandoning my sisters and I (I was in college already so easier for me; not as easy for my sisters or my mom) to this new phase b/c I'm the only family member who talks to him and he's lonely. But he is my father, and it will be nice building a better relationship with him...as long as expectations are set and met.

wow. good for you for standing up for yourself and your boundaries! I am sure it was very hard, but probably very worth it in the long run and a load off your chest.

I know it wasn't easy for you to do, but it was the right thing to do and it was well received. I hope your relationship keeps blossoming!
