1. Why do you run?

I run for the benefits to physical and mental health, for the endorphin rush, for the "alone" time, for the challenge and the pure enjoyment. My "big picture" reason is that running helps me to live the kind of life I want to live: active, healthy, always learning and pushing myself. It helps to remember this when the smaller goals don't work out.

2. What is your greatest accomplishment?

My family is most dear to me. I can't imagine a greater accomplishment than for them to consider me a great husband, father, and human being. I would say this is a work in progress.

3. What is your motto/theme song?

Theme song: nothing in particular. My mental soundtrack changes all the time.

Motto: while I am running it is, "relaxed, light, quick". Repeating it helps me at least feel that way.

4. How do you deal with bad runs?

Some runs are better than others, but I don't think I've ever had a run that I would call "bad". Any time I have the ability and opportunity to "enjoy the gift", there will be good things about the experience. Why not focus on those things?

5. Do you reward yourself for good runs? How?

A banana, chocolate milk, maybe an ice bath. An ice bath is a reward, you know.

6. Who do you admire most?

I admire my father for his integrity, generosity, and kindness. Life has given him ample reason to become bitter or discouraged, but instead he has let these experiences make him wise and compassionate.

7. What is the greatest advice you have ever received?

Happiness comes from forgetting yourself and helping others.

8. What do wish you had learned younger?

See no. 7.

9. What do you wish you could do but can't?

Fly a helicopter.

10. How would your friends describe your personality?

Quiet, reserved, and serious until I you know you better, then funny and more light-minded. I don't like to see people discouraged or upset. At heart I am a peacemaker.

11. What do you wear running? favorite outfit?

Nothing that I wear (running or otherwise) rises to the level of an "outfit". I love my Pearl Izumi Fly shorts. I like Under Armour compression gear as a base layer. I run mostly in lightweight trainers. I do some "barefoot" running in

Vibram Fivefingers.
12. What has been your favorite race?

Hobble Creek Half Marathon, 2007. I set a goal for that race which required me to run beyond what I thought my abilities were (inspired by some good folks here on KR!). It was an important mental breakthrough.

13. Do you have a goal race right now?

Ogden Marathon in May. This will be my first marathon. I'd love to do it, but I'm behind in my training. The next couple weeks will decide.

14. What makes you happy?

Small things: nailing a hard workout, holidays, homemade bread, road trips, new batteries, massage, food from our garden, time with family and friends, sleeping in on Sundays, rain, our puppy

Reggie.

Big things: being true to myself, being a good husband and father, being successful in my career... keeping everything in balance!

15. Tell us one interesting thing about you that you haven't said (at least not often) on this forum in the past.

I used to play viola, piano, and classical guitar (no, not all at the same time). I don't play any instrument now, but I still remember how to read music.

16. Tell us one interesting thing about another user of this forum that has not been posted (at least not often) on this forum in the past (make sure the other person will not object to posting the info!).

Hi Mike! Great POTD! I think Mike is a great guy to run with as I had the privledge to go for a short run with him while I was in the Salt Lake City area in December. He kept his pace slow for this old guy and it was nice to meet and run with him. Larry

Glad to get to know you a little better! I didn't know about your planned May marathon . . . hopefully, this past gunk you had will not put you too far behind! But as Hally pointed out, Hartford has a fall marathon!

I rewarded myself with my good long run yesterday the exact same way you do - chocolate milk, banana and an ice bath.
