I'm coming to Miami in April for a conference, and was hoping I could hook up with people for some swims/runs (possibly rides if I bring my bike?). I'm staying at the Days Hotel Thunderbird Beach Resort, and will be around from the afternoon of the 2nd until the morning of the 6th. Does anyone know much about transportation from Ft. Lauderdale airport? Do you think it will be cheaper to rent a car or take a shuttle/taxi?

Thanks and I hope I get to meet some of you this spring!
Hey, that's me.

A taxi will cost ya a pretty penny. It's 20+ miles form FTl to Miami. I'll look up the hotel addy and give you a btter idea. I'm thinking the shuttle would be better. April is a great time in S. Florida. The weather is premo and the water is flat glass.

Keep me posted as time gets closer. Maybve I can come downand we can swim and run. It'll really cost ya to bring your bike.
I can hook you up with my tri-group in Miami (South Florida Triathletes/Hammerheads). Some of us will be gearing up for St Anthony's at the end of April. You'll have lots of runs/bikes/swims to choose from. You can email me at cshechter at bsss-cpa.com as it gets closer and I'll give you the exact times and locations of workouts.

Hi Meg,

I have a really good friend who is also my trainer who lives outside Miami (approx. 30k). He has a lot of triathlon experience, all distances, especially Ironman (22x!!) He's also a coach and a super awesome mechanic ... I mentioned that you'd be coming down and he said you could train with his group or he could show you where to train, and he could even put your bike together for you. He might even be able to give you a lift to Miami since he's 20 min. from the airport ... heck, why spend $100 on cab fare?

The offer's there, he's a super nice guy and an incredible athlete (has a lot of experience racing in Europe if you want to pick his brain). E-mail me and I can give you his coordinates. He trained me for my first marathon, and instilled me with the dream of Ironman ... and voila, there you have it!

And for those who are from Miami and are a member of the Hammerheads, he trained Paul Kvedaras for IMC 2006 ... do any of you know him?

Actually if anyone from that area would like to reach my friend Dirk, then e-mail me - he could hook you up with more triathletes in your area or you could pick his brain too.

Cheers, and have fun!

p.s. Back to on-topic ... I think some of you Hammerheads may actually know my trainer friend, Dirk Smeets ... I think he's raced with some of you ... let me know since it would be cool to mention you all to him!

Don't know Dirk, do know Paul. I think he might be doing SA, too. Tithers, I've never done SA before but I've heard that it's huuuuuge. Water can be calm or rolly. Streets can be crowded for bike. My husband is doing it with me, and our kids are doing the mini-tri the day before, so I'm excited.
St A's has one rule for training. PRACTICE YOUR BIKE HANDLING SKILLS. The bike course has 23 turns and you will need to know how to get around those corners and then get back into a rhythm pretty quick.

Thanks for the advice, Sheldon. Ever since Miami Man I've been overly cautious about taking turns. My leg still needs to be wrapped or it swells back, up and I'm pretty sure that my arm is going to be permanently scarred. Could have been way, way worse, though. I'll definitely start spending some more time practicing my bike handling. My neighborhood is perfect for it. Will you be doing SA this year?
