QUESTIONS

1. Why do you run?

If i did not run, i would go insane! It is the best stress reliever out there. I originally started running after i moved to PA from MA. I signed up for a marathon training program. I did it for a couple reasons- to run a marathon, meet people, and lose those last 10 lbs. I ran that marathon, going from 0-marathon in 6 months, met a lot of really nice people, and gained 10 lbs

2. What is your greatest accomplishment?

That's a hard one. Probably, to date, the Grand Teton 100 mile race. This was the hardest race i have ever done. First off, i am a flatlander who lives at sea level, and this race tops out at 10,500 feet and goes up and down HUGE mountains. All the training in the world in PA could not have prepared me for those mountains. BUT i did it. It was hard. It was long, but i finished, and i finished 2 hours ahead of the cutoff. In the middle of the night, i truly thought i was not going to finish the race, it was devastating after traveling all the way to Wyoming. My coach is the race director and having her there was so special as well. She is one incredible person. Only 28 people finished that race. I was proud to be one of them.

3. What is your motto/theme song?

Cosmic Dancer (originally by Trex, but Morrisey does a nice cover )

4. How do you deal with bad runs?

I very rarely have a truly bad run. If i do, i know, from experience, that there will be a good run around the corner. This is one of the most important things i have learned in my running career.

5. Do you reward yourself for good runs? How?

No rewards. Just feeling good.

6. Who do you admire most?

My coach from highschool. He coached me mostly in tennis and we were very close through those years. He really instilled in me a "can do" attitude. Going to a Quaker school, no one gets cut from the sports team, there is always room for every student. My first season at school (fall of 9th grade) i went out for the tennis team. I was told by the school counselor that joining a sports team would be a good way to meet people at a new school. I tried out and did not make varsity or jv, but third team. I was the third team. Me and coach Phil We had practices together every day and went to other schools for 3rd team matches. It was great. By my senior year i was 2nd or 3rd singles on JV!! His confidence in me has really followed me through my life.

7. What is the greatest advice you have ever received?

relax. take deep breaths.

8. What do wish you had learned younger?

That life is too short for toxic people to be a part of it.

9. What do you wish you could do but can't?

win the lottery, stop working, and move out west

10. How would your friends describe your personality?

nice, caring, friendly?

11. What do you wear running? favorite outfit?

I am not in love with my running clothes. They are a necessity more than anything else. For races it is always race ready tights or shorts and some shirt. I wear Brooks shoes though.

12. What has been your favorite race?

Umstead 2007. To have such a great group of Kicksters and my husband and good friend Keith there, was a truly incredible experience. No better way to complete my first 100 miler.

13. Do you have a goal race right now?

WESTERN STATES 100 MILE ENDURANCE RUN!!!!!!!
(i still am in shock that i got picked!!!)
14. What makes you happy?

95% of the time i am pretty happy go lucky. Running makes me happy. Setting goals and completing them makes me happy. Positive feedback from my patients makes me happy.

15. Tell us one interesting thing about you that you haven't said (at least not often) on this forum in the past.

I almost went into the restaurant business with a friend i worked as a pastry chef with prior to graduate school.

Great POTD, meri. It was really inspiring to read how your tennis coach affected your life. It's amazing what believing in another person can bring out in them and you have a great example of that.

As someone who is proud to be among your many friends here I would also add "tough, positive, funny, and super smart" to describe you.

Great POTD, Meri!

I will never forget how you were "there" for me, on that other running website when I was sick and in panic mode the morning of the Flying Pig Marathon.

You are truly one of the best imaginary friends that a person could have.

Meri, you are a rock star! You've been one of my inspirations - when struggling with a run I often think about you gutting it out in a 100-miler, and then those few extra miles aren't so difficult after all. I've had the pleasure of meeting you, and you are indeed nice, caring, and friendly. I hope to see you one day again soon!

BTW - I want mile 99 of your virtual WS100 crew!

Great POTD, meri!! You are such an inspiration to a lot of people here. I'm glad that I can say that I've met you and been around you. I never wanted to run a marathon before the Grand Tetons. Now, I'm crazy enough to think I may want to run the marathon THERE!!

I whole-heartedly support you on #9.

Thanks everyone for the kind words

The Grand Teton 100 miler is ranked harder than WS100. As far as heat, it can go either way at either race. I did get severely sunburned at the Tetons this year

I wish I would have been more aggresive with the sunscreen. I could tell you were a little out of it, but that you needed it. I didn't know how you'd feel about me rubbing it on your legs and such. Next time, I'm going to have a can of the spray on sunscreen and I'll just do it.
