we were away this weekend watching my husband's nieces, about an hour from home in scenic Andover, MA. Our plan was to watch them Friday - Sunday, SIL/BIL get home at 1:30, we head home and to the gym for our scheduled 3.5 miler.

this is what actually happened: SIL/BIL get home, offer to take us out to a nice dinner. We say, no, we can't, we have to run (have a plan we have to keep up with)... we get talked into staying... so we went out to Target, bought running clothes, and went for a run outside around the flatter part of Andover.

for the first time in my life, running/exercise was not the first thing to get compromised when something else came up. I also ran 3.5 miles without walking for the first time ever, and more importantly paced myself well enough that I feel that I could have gone longer, and actually (wait for it) ENJOYED myself. Helped that the faster husband ran with me and gave me garmin updates, but still, I'm super proud of myself today and for the first time really feel like I might be able to accomplish my goal for my oly (goal: no walking on the run, 8/24 oly)

thanks for all of the stories of good runs and bad... one of the biggest changes in my running this year is my outlook, and you guys are certainly a part of that.

and apparently I like to run in the rain.

Awesome news Monica. Pretty soon you'll be one of those people who take an extra suitcase just filled with workout gear on vacation.

I've got a conference in NYC next month.....
I don't know how many days I'll be there that will be available for running....don't know if I'll have access to a pool or not.

Congrats, Monica! Isn't this the best feeling in the world? Something so dreaded and challenging is now fun and exciting! Keep with it. It only gets better.

Wait a minute--an EXRTA suitcase? When I got "the call" before Grandpa died, I packed an overnight bag. My gym bag was already packed...

This is great because it really does represent a mental shift. Soon you will think nothing of 3 miles then 6 miles then 10 miles and you will be begging for more.

Well BrewDad & I usually share a suitcase for our workout gear. And if we're going to a destination race, it's the only one that doesn't get checked.

Congrats Monica on the discipline. I'm someone who is easily distracted by anything to skip workouts. Congrats too on the new distance, and the fun you had ... you just wait ... you're gonna be in total awe of the distance and the ease at which you'll be running soon ...

That's so cool Monica! Take that awesome feeling and try to remember it forever. When things get tough in the future you can remember how awesome it felt to make a good decsion and have an awesome run!
It took me a LONG time to actually enjoy running. I used to say there was just no reason to run more than 3 miles at a time (sprint tri). and now I just did my first half marathon and LOVED it!

Well done, Em. It is a big milestone going from dreading your time while running to all of a sudden you slip into and become one with the environment. Know also that often the first mile will hurt mentally the most, but once you're out there, breathing the fresh air, willing your legs to pump more, the rest seemlessly becomes easier.

And I'll leave it for you to decide whether to do the 5-miler, but it you are skittish about it because you fear you might not be able to run that distance, if you start on the slow side, there is no reason why you cannot run 5 miles.

Keep up the GREAT work!

Awesome work Monica - these journeys are about these little victories, which often lead to some pretty awesome and even life-changing accomplishments.

Here's hoping for many more little victories on your way to your first Oly.

I never forgot the first time I could run 3 miles without stopping, and you won't either. Its a great feeling and before you know it you'll be doubling that distance w/o walking! Congratulations!

Very cool!!! I remember the shift for me as well. I also remember barely being able to run 3 miles (just over a year ago). Just keep it up, and 3 miles will be nothing! You CAN reach that goal for your Oly in August (though it is o.k. to walk some -- I walked every mile of my HM and still ran my goal time)!
