Judge order arrest of man who drove himself to DWI hearing drunk

A judge in Bartlesville, Okla., noticed that the man standing in front of him on a drunken driving charge smelled of alcohol.

The judge asked if the man had driven himself to court that day. The man replied he had. That prompted the judge to order a breathalyzer test.

To make a long story short, Tommy Joe Thomison, 50, was re-arrested in court during his DWI hearing and charged with public intoxication. He was taken from court in handcuffs, television station KJRH of Tulsa reported.

Please don't skewer me. I'm just venting.

How does this person differ from the Tuscon shooter? This guy in court obviously needs help. He, or other multiple dwi/dui offenders will kill someone or many someones. It's only 8k people difference (app), but it doesn't tell the whole story. I'm not pro/anti alcohol. I am just PISSED at how many people die needlessly due to drinking and NO ONE says anything. Here we have a few people killed by a firearm and manner of death matters? Legislation is necessary? How many people died due to drunk drivers at the same time Loughner was shooting up Tuscon? Did anyone give a f*ck? I'm sorry. I'm just blowing off some steam. I really don't want a fight. I am very saddened by the death and injury that happened in Tuscon, especially that beautiful little girl who died, but I'm tired of people freaking about his mental illness and "something should be done" hand wringing. People die. Murder is already illegal. If the kid did nothing, he cannot be committed prophylactically. Should he have been institutionalized? Sure. But somehow the system didn't get him. How do we get people with more than one DUI? I understand getting one. People make mistakes. Two is a pattern. I don't hear congress freaking out about alcohol related deaths. aaaaaagh. sorry. just needed a vent. Please don't tear me up. Just please don't drink and drive.

We had a cop here driving home at 0600, several times the legal limit, drive 100mph into the back of a lady's SUV. Yes. 0600. That lady's life is changed forever. He is dead. Alcohol: legal, motorcycle: legal.

And I do not believe in making alcohol illegal. We tried that. I just want the media to have some perspective about the whole gun and mental illness thing.

It's the nature of the media - and people in general to get worked up about mental illness and guns when someone who is probably mentally ill shoots 23 people. When some pretty teenage girl gets killed by a drunk driver, everyone gets worked up about drunk driving. That's the news cycle and the knee-jerk world we live in. We don't get strung-out over every drunk driver any more than we wring out hands over every kid that gets shot on the South Side of Chicago. You've gotta push certain hot buttons to get America roused from its customary lethargy. Congresswomen and 9-yr-old girls are two of those buttons.

You are right. I guess there's not much any of us can do than be present and responsible in and for our own world.
