This is going to be a short one folks: I don't run!

1. Why do you run?
I started running in high school. It should be noted that there is very little high school sport here, and no high school running. A lot of sports, including
track and field, is done outside of the school system. Since my best friend had started doing track (and was quite good at it), I decided to try. I stank.

But I kept at it, 5 times a week. Kept me out of troubles! At 16, I ran a 5K and finished 2nd in my age-group (I believe there were 3 of us) and a 10K. I had never ran more than 7 or 8 kilometers before the race but I managed something like 44 minutes. And I won a trip to Disneyland!

I quit running for a few decades after that (except for shortich end-of-summer base training for fencing) and started again around 2003, when I was living in France. I loved running on old roman roads, thinking that Ceasar had been there, looking at the Dover cliffs! I ran up to the day we moved back here in 2004 but didn't manage to get back into it when we got here.

A year later, my son wanted to do a 1k race, so I started "training". I got really hooked and ran for several months, 5 times a week. Up to 20 kilometers! I even did a race, a 5K in 25:08. But I got tendinitis in the hip in winter 2005 and even though I tried a couple of times to start over again, I didn't quite manage. Yet.

2. What is your greatest accomplishment?
Somehow managing to be a parent. It's hard, it's getting harder, but I haven't quit that yet.

3. What is your motto/theme song?
No motto. But I always had a song by Carla Bruni on my runs: La Dernière minute. It lasts exactly one minute, I used it to sprint a little bit.

4. How do you deal with bad runs?
I always figured I needed more sleep.

5. Do you reward yourself for good runs? How?
I just loved how a good run made me feel for a whole day after it.

6. Who do you admire most?
My wife.

7. What is the greatest advice you have ever received?
Re-read what you write. Twice. And a third time.
(But I don't do it)

8. What do wish you had learned younger?
More languages.

9. What do you wish you could do but can't?
Run.

10. How would your friends describe your personality?
Boring or noisy.
I have several personalities.

11. What do you wear running? favorite outfit?
Shorts, reflective vests over a shirt, and a cap. My iPod.

12. What has been your favorite race?
I don't like races. I don't like people and there are a lot of people at races.

13. Do you have a goal race right now?
No.

14. What makes you happy?
Food and alone time and time with my kids.

15. Tell us one interesting thing about you that you haven't said (at least not often) on this forum in the past.
I used to be really involved in politics, but I have stopped almost all my activity.

16. Tell us one interesting thing about another user of this forum that has not been posted (at least not often) on this forum in the past (make sure the other person will not object to posting the info!).
HighHeat is a great photographer.

Do you really not like people? Is that a Canjun thing? And what gives with starting your POTD a day early? I think there's some kind of penalty for that.

POTD!! Wahoo!! Great one, Martin. Thank you for sharing yourself with us. Politician, eh? I never would have guessed. How come you don't share your other personalities in the Friday night chats?

I don't like doing things with a lot of other people. I'm a bear.
And I'm lazy. I amaze myself that I did this, so I decided to post it as soon as it was done

See, Nettie understands.
I did a lot of volunteer work with the Bloc Québécois, a federal political party aiming for the independance of Québec. But I'm becoming more of a loner in my old age. Except for school president in high school, I'm not and will not become a "politician". The job is too hard.

Merci, Martin.

This has probably been covered at some point, but est-ce que tu parle francais ou anglais most of the time?

I can see if you don't like a lot of people why you got out of politics. Sometimes the masses at races can definitely be disconcerting, whether you like people or not.

I like you.

...You don't like people?

But....some of my best friends are people!

I know what you mean, though.

I've never felt comfortable at large parties or being with huge crowds of people.

The curse of being an introvert, I suppose.

Nice POTD Martin

YEAH! That was great!

Although, you NEVER have come across as not liking people; quite the opposite, in fact.

What I'm trying to say is that I don't like the proximity of large groups of people.

Or even better: I don't like being in groups trying to build some kind of temporary common purpose. I don't mind taking the bus but I don't like going on bus tour where people feel they need to build short-term thin relationships.

SGH: I speak French almost all the time. I do have some meetings in English (US vendors or non-French speaking doctors), but that's about it.

Martin - thanks for posting this. I enjoyed reading you POTD. You seem like such a fun loving person. I don't like crowds much either. That's why I love the trails and trail events.

Do you think you will run again?

Martin, my hubby feels the same way as you about people/crowds, but like you, he is also a super fun person when you know him.

Thanks for sharing!

Which language is your first? When did you learn the other?
