It's such a terrible thing.

But honestly it doesn't surprise me. I think so many of them go numb to what the value of life is.

I can't even bring myself to read the story.

There is a great book out there about a Marine who goes thru all kinds of stuff to get this puppy that he and his unit adopted home to America. From Baghdad With Love...
http://www.amazon.com/Baghdad-Love-M...4753335&sr=1-2

It's a great book.

I think it probably goes to show you that some people are kind to animals and others are not. I personally place a lot of value in being kind to animals, and have a seething hatred for people who are cruel to them.

Some people are kind of indifferent to them, but they are not the ones who hurt them purposefully. I'm talking about people who do horrible things to animals.

I won't watch that video!

The military has guidelines on animals. There was a story about a guy who saved a dog and the dog followed him to the next base. His commander told him to get rid of it, or "get rid of it". Luckily he raised some money to send it to the U.S. With a policy like that, it isn't a long road to what is stated to have happened with the pup.

http://bluestarchronicles.com/2008/0...nd-his-marine/

Big difference.

In the book I talked about above, the Marine talks about how some US marine code specifically states that they can't take in animals, but that he just couldn't put the puppy down.

But if he had done it humanely, that is so much different. Unfortunately, especially in places like Baghdad, there are lots of wild animals and for safety and health reasons, putting them down (humanely) is the best option.

not saying there isn't. However, there is a basic indifference towards the life of the animal that is broken in both situations. Once you break that, I feel that making those steps into torture and cruelty is much easier for the person

I respectfully disagree.

It isn't indifference to life, it's sometimes best for the animal if they are sick, starving, etc, and there is nothing you can do to help them.

Is it sad? Absolutely. Nothing breaks my heart worse than seeing animals abused, starving, etc. I can barely watch Animal Planet because I'm ready to adopt everything.

I know quite a few people who have humanely had an animal put down that would never be cruel to one. I honestly don't think they are the same thing. I could not, however, put an animal down myself. I'm way to emotional about that stuff.

I can barely watch animal planet too. Gets me every time. However, in the case of "Nub" he wasn't sick or starving at that point. He was just hanging around the base and the military police didn't want him there. It was against their rules. So instead of having him around, they told the guy he had to make it leave or kill it. That is far different than putting an animal down for legitmate health reasons.

I started crying on the treadmill yesterday morning when I saw that on CNN. It was horrible. I didn't even watch it but I knew what the end result could be. I seriously hope that guy gets what's coming to him. What a bastard.
