Hi folks,

The Chicago 20k came and went for me this Sunday, I hear some folks actually ran a marathon. Oh well, life goes on, I will spend the next little while seeking medical answers on my leg issues and regrouping. Meanwhile, we've got both Indianapolis Marathons represented (smart move switching SeaPig - I know some other folks doing it to) and NY is looming!

Happy training!

Zrun, sorry your day didn't go as planned. It's hard to hide from any kind of injury in a marathon. The distance always "finds you out." Throw in the weather of yesterday and it made for a perfect storm, no doubt. Get well and return to fight another day.

Another up and down week of training for me. That's a little disappointing because I really want to be peaking right now on the mileage. Two good quality workouts, but a missed trail run on Friday and a shorter ride than I wanted to do on Saturday due an emergency flat tire repair midway through. A busy schedule, especially at work, keeps interfering with training.

That said, I'm going to try and really go for a monster week this week, because after that it's time to start tapering for my day in the Big Apple.

M 10/4 - Rest day (planned)

Tu 10/5 - Tempo run (15 min @ 6:40, 12 min @ 6:40, 1 mile @ MP (7:15), 7.7 miles

W 10/6 - 7 easy

Th 10/7 - Yasso 800s (8x800 avg. 3:18), 8.5 total

F 10/8 - rest (unplanned)

Sa 10/9 - cycling 30 miles

Su 10/10 - soccer match, played 40 mins.

Those like me who are still due up, train and taper well. Those done, recover well!

Not a bad week last week. Had to shuffle runs around due to mine and my wife's work schedules, but I still got the miles in.

This Week:

S - 15: Actual ==>

M - 5: Actual ==>

T - 10: Actual ==>

W - 5: Actual ==>

F - 7: Actual ==>

Not a good start this week since I screwed up reading my training schedule and never ran yesterday. So it will take some creating running to get my other runs in this week.

Have a good week everyone.

Zrun- Sorry to hear about the DNF. Hope you're able to regroup and translate the great training you've had so far into a better performance later!

FB - Way to be flexible on the schedule. And how 'bout them Boilers on Saturday, eh?

BigG - Congrats on the PR! Huge!

I was traveling last week, so it was pretty light mileage-wise. I anticipate this week being my biggest of the year - 3 weeks out and I have an over-distance run planned for Saturday (6 hour in South Bend). As for last week:

M- Rest

T - 4.5

W - 6, trails

Th - 7.2, including 8 x 800 @ 3:28

F- Rest

Sa - 9.5, including 15k trail run @ 1:12

Su - 4, easy

Total - 31.2

ZRUN -

It was amazingly hard to head to chicago and not line-up for the start. I was definitely looking forward to finally getting an A corral start but the sun has been following me around the last few years and I have ran smack dab into it on more than one occaison and it always wins and the fight can get pretty bloody. Unfortunately I have learned this leason the hard way. Recovery should be quicker for you than the usual 26.2 pounding. I also have also been accused of just wanting an extra week of taper!!! Hopefully all goes well in Indy, I am only allowed one mulligan.

Hey all,

Mini report from this past weekend, since I don't think I'll be writing a full blown race report.

So, I went to Jackson Mississippi to run a small marathon call the Run for Life Marathon. There were only about 250 registered in the full about 500+ in the half. The course was a two loop route. Relatively flat, on roads in a not yet developed Office building / residential area. So, nothing to look at, and no shade. Weather was about 56 at the start and heated up quickly.

I didn't know what I was going to have after running 3:16 three weeks ago. Turns out that nagging head cold had slipped into a slight chest cold and a lot of little things just didn't seem to go right in my pre-race routine. And, to top it off, I didn't win the Honda Fit that they gave away 30 mins before the gun. The gun goes off and we're off. By mile two I was coughing and hacking and knowing that something in the 7:15 mpm pace wasn't feeling too easy. So, I backed off a bit. Around mile 6, a group caught up to me and I moved in with them. There were 6 of us and we ran about 7:35 pace from mile 6 - 12. After mile 13, when most turned off to finish the HM, it was pretty deserted out there. I now know why, after splitting the half in 1:39, I was in 4th place on the road.

I slowed a bit and let the guy behind me catch me so we could chat. He was running the race as a training run and is going to be the 3:20 pacer in Indy in a few weeks. We ran and talked about races for 2.5 miles or so, then, I let him go, and dropped back some more. Two more guys slipped by my.

My pace gradually slowed as the sun and the heat got higher. At 19 or so, I stopped to take a leak in a porta potty. Man was it hot in there. Back on the road, I held an 8:00 something pace. From mile 22 to the finish, I walked all the of the water stops and took two cups of water, one to drink and one to pour over my head. By then, it was full on survival. I made it to the point where I could see the park and the finish area. From there, I stepped it up to 7:52 pace. Final time: 3:34:21. That was good for 7th over all and 1st in AG. I was sitting on the curb drinking a bottle of water when the female overall winner came to the line about 65 seconds after me.

I'm registering for the Huntsville Marathon today. So I'll be back in the marathon game in December. The weather should be cooler then.

Stats for last week:

M- 40 minutes Ellip

T - 7 including 5k at MP

W - 4.3 Easy

Th - 6 Easy

F- Rest

Sa - Rest

Su - 12.4 of Chicago marathon

Total - 29.7 Miles, 0:40 Ellip

The Expo was decent, got to talk to Bart Yasso briefly and saw Khalid Khannouchi signing books for a long line of people. I was there early Saturday, it seemed less crowded than previous years. One move that showed foresight was stocking up on tickets for free beer at the post-race party, so was able to drown my sorrows with Goose Island 312

Hawk - almost there... just a few more tough ones before the taper. You're going to have a blast in NYC.

FB - good job getting the miles in last week and good luck shuffling them around this week.

Swallen - first ultra? Good luck and easy does it!

Sea Pig - I ran Indy in 2005 and know some folks doing the half this year... nice & well run small race

Tim - Sounds like a tough one... way to go wtih the AG win! Huntsville seems to be a popular one for runners around here, good luck.

Thanks zrun. So sorry to hear about your leg issues at Chicago. That had to be a tough day of running. At least you got the beer and plenty of it. I hope you enjoyed some of the weekend.

Another late check-in... Mondays seem to really get away from me lately. I also had a light mileage week b/c of some last minute travel out to Vegas, no fun leaving perfect fall temps to arrive in LV for 80s and 90s again. Decided against going for 20 mi out there and will focus on the coming two weekends of LRs instead. A couple running buddies and I have a big bridges route planned for this Saturday including 4 East River crossings starting with the Queensboro bridge which is miles 15-16 of NYCM - should be lots of fun!

Oh man zrun, I feel your pain! I hope some time and recovery helps getting you feeling better and ready for the next race. p.s. love me some Goose Island 312!!

Hawk & Swallen – I had a low week too w/travel… keep your chins up, your running solid and we'll arrive at race day ready and rested.

Good luck in Indy, Seapig!

Nice mileage FB!

Tim – you’re a total rockstar!

M - 90 mins yoga

T - 7.7 ez mi

W - 7.32 mi including 3 x 10 mins @tempo

T - 6.9 ez mi

F - 6 ez mi

S - rest

S - 6 ez mi

Cool that you can do a long run over all those bridges. I have to admit, I'm getting a bit obsessed with how to deal with them all as the big day approaches. We don't have anything like the Verrezano in DC. Wilson Bridge which I did, is a little baby bridge by comparison.

That said I do have a doozy of a long run planned for Saturday...from my house in Fairfax all the way to the high school in DC where my wife will be playing soccer. According to MapMyRun it's 22.4 miles and the last 3-4 are a steady uphill climb.

that sounds like a great long run route / race simulation. I know the giant 24 mile loop that we did around BHAM 3 weeks before Air Force paid nice dividends.

maria, I remember that Queensborough bridge well. Hits you right when you don't need it. Lots of carnage on that puppy. I hope to run <90 Half sometime in the next 6 months so I can run NYC again.

Tim, that's a small marathon. TOo bad about the car!

Ditto on the Queensborough bridge.... I remember the surge of energy from the crowds entering Manhattan after getting off the bridge, immediately followed by the realization that my legs were now shot!

Yeah, both times I've run NYCM in the past I didn't struggle while climbing the Queensboro but after coming off it and running a bit up First Ave I realized I was donezo. That run up First Ave is great for awhile b/c of the crazy crowds but sooner than later you're just begging for the next bridge to show up simply so you can get into the Bronx.

Hawk - which corral are you starting in? b/c the Verrazano, IMO, may be a non-issue, i.e. orange always starts a good deal up the bridge so there's not much climbing left to do, same with green.

Well, according to my registration card (which I just printed out, thanks for the reminder), I am in Green Wave #1, Corral 6.

I love the Beastie Boys jam "No Sleep til Brooklyn" however, I think I clearly need to keep it cool through Brooklyn then be ready for the second half and all those bridges and Manhattan streets.

Also...we should meet up sometime over that weekend. I'll be rolling into town with DW sometime on Friday, taking the Mega Bus up from DC.

Well ran out a gas at mile 24....Did manage a 3:21, which was amazingly good for 3rd AG, but I was little disappointed. Was at 7:21 pace at mile 22 before it started to slide.

Now back to the drawing board regarding my training. I think I missed my mid-week medium/long run, which I was suppose to replace with speed work that only kinda happened.

I also was 3 to 4 lbs. lighter than last year when I ran a 3:09 so I was really thinking that was going to equate to 2 to 3 minutes for me but that did not happen.

Kinda does not work well in the marathon game. Surely I am not getting old

SeaPig - sorry the race didn't go as planned, at least for the last 4 miles - but nice time anyway and that 3rd AG is some pretty sweet consolation. There are just so many variables that go into it with weight, training, tapering, nutrition, etc.... Rest up and have a great recovery.
