Hey folks!

The weather finally broke for me a bit, but my training got completely derailed due to injury. I ran a strong 12 miler on Friday morning and had planned to get in a 20 miler this weekend. But somehow after my run on Friday I tweaked my lower back. And by "tweaked," I mean I could hardly walk and looked like a little old lady (felt like it too). I tried to run on Saturday, but there was no way I could handle the impact. Yesterday was just as bad. I am hoping to get out the tonight after work for a couple miles, but I am SUPER bummed. It iseems like training is just refusing to work out for me this season. I hope each of you are faring much better on the training front.

I hope your back gets better soon girl!! Have you seen a doc or chiro about it?

Last week was pretty good training-wise.

Mon - rest

Tues - 4

Wed - 6

Thu - rest

Fri - 6

Sat - 15 miles long run (supposed to be 19 but a thunderstorm that started at mile 13 cut things short)

Sun - 9 miles (on the dreadmill, ugh)

My wonky left shin is twingey so I'm listening to it today and possibly making today a rest day. I have 10 to run tomorrow and I'd rather run the 10 tomorrow successfully than force the 4 miler today and have tomorrow's 10 get blown out of the water.

Happy Training everyone!

That sucks about your back, Runninlaw. Ditto on seeing a doctor, and I hope it heals up quick. Smart move taking it easy BigG, and nice miles! I had a bit of a train wreck this week, guess it's going around. Did a little too much/too hard Tues-Thur and felt the hamstring tightness starting, then compounded things by trying to push through it over the weekend. Plan is to xtrain on the elliptical today through Thursday this week and see how a short easy run feels Friday.

Mon - 5.6 Easy

Tues - 9 including 7 x 800 on indoor track at 10k pace

Wed - AM: 5.2 on treadmill, supposed to be easy, PM: 8.1 at outdoor track - mostly easy w/ a couple of 800s at MP/10k pace

Thu - 10 miles easy

Fri - Off at amusement park

Sat - 5.3 including 5k race - dreadful performance and R hamstring sore afterwards

Sun - 10 miles - supposed to be 20 but cut short due to hamstring pain, then 60 minutes elliptical.

Total: 53.4 Miles, 1:00 Elliptical

Sorry about the injury woes...I always find there are some aches and pains to get through when I start ramping back up again. Nothing specific for me. Some days it's the knees, some days the shin. Right now the hips are a little sore. Nothing I can't get through.

First "official" week of training for me was last week and it was a decent start:

M 8/2 - 4.86 easy

Tu 8/3 - 5k race in 19:48, 5.3 miles total

W 8/4 - 7.57 easy

Th 8/5 - tempo run 2 x 12 @ 6:40 pace + 5 x 1 @ 5k pace, 7.65 total

F 8/6 - spinning 10.33 miles + weights

Sa 8/7 - long run 16 on trail near home

Su 8/8 - 30 min soccer in morning, 10.2 miles trail cycling in evening

41.4 miles running, 20.5 miles cycling, plus a "soccer mile" or two. The 16 miler on Saturday was the longest I had run since Boston, and my legs definitely felt it for the last 4 miles or so. Pace was slow - about 9:05/mile - but I did keep the heart rate in the desired range (140s). The pace numbers should improve as my marathon fitness returns.

RIL - sorry to hear that you're dinged up. I hope you can heal up quick and get out of the road.

My training is still a slug fest with the weather. We have been 95+ everyday for the last couple of weeks. Heat index is over 100+ almost all the time. Last weekends LR was cut down to 16 miles with the last 3 run/walk because I went out too fast with some training partners and found myself in the red zone early around 4 miles into the run. Humidity was 90% at 5:00am start. I'm going to have to do another reply. This text editor is F***ed up. When I hit enter it adds lines at the top instead of going down the left margin.

w - AM: 8 miles PM 5 miles

t - 2.5 miles with 3x Hill repeats

f - 8 ez

s - 2.1 mile warm up + 5K 23:14 (100 degree heat index @ 8:00am start)

s - 9 miles run/walk aborted my long run; slept horrible the night before and skipped going early. Went in the afternoon and it was sunny and 96 acutal. I melted after about 5 miles

Thanks everyone. I am not going to the doctor - it seems like a muscle pull that is resolving (although slowly). It really isn't that big of a deal, but like I said, it just seems like one major obstacle after another this season. But I haven't given up yet.

Nice job on that 16 miler, Hawk!

Tim, I don't know how you run in that heat. Coooooool vibes coming your way. I ran on Friday and the humidity had broken and it was in the 60s. Still warmer than ideal, but it felt do welcome with the hot, humid conditions we've had lately.

Z and G - I hope your hurty parts heal up soon too!

Hellloooo all and happy Monday! Sorry to have missed you all last week, I was traveling in the Midwest and having a hard time managing some work time, limited internet connectivity and then being completely off the grid for a few days - which felt great! My running was a HUGE BUST however, and I was feeling sorry for myself until having a good convo with coach today. Today starts a new week and I'm going to take it one day at a time.

Last week did provide one good thing fitness related, lots of time in the water and with that lots of open water swimming down in the Ozarks. It felt great and humbling at the same time and reminded me that I cannot seem to swim in a straight line :)

M - rest

T - 8 miles ez

W-F - rest from running, lots of swimming

S - 10 miles ez

S - 8 miles ez

Total = 26 miles

Mindi - hope your back is feeling better this week!!!

Happy Tuesday, everyone!

Mindi, Gahoona, zrun - sorry about the injuries. Major bummer during "official" marathon training season.

My week was weak from a mileage standpoint, but all because Saturday was my first ever triathlon! It was the most fun I've had in a loooong time racing. There's another in two weeks that hadn't even been on my radar until now...

In the meantime, I have a marathon to train for. Here are the ugly stats:

M - 5

T - 4.5, including 4x800 @ 3:10-3:24

W - rest

Th - 3.5

F - Bike 9

Sa - swim 350, bike 10.1, run 3.1 (1:05)

Su - 5.1 easy

Total: 21.2 run, 19.1 bike

Have a great week!

Steve
