First post in this section ( I usually stick to the PRT)
Anyway, I'm running a marathon Saturday which has decline for the first 18 miles. I'm trying to figure out how to pace myself. Despite the common wisdom that says you shouldn't try to bank time in th beginning it seems like in this extreme case ( http://www.marathongis.com/products/tou/profile.pdf) I should try to bank some minutes. I'm shooting for 3:40 since that is my BQ time. Any advice would be appreciated
Thanks in advance.

I would try to go for an 8:20 pace effort on the downhill, resulting in a slightly faster pace than 8:20. That's assuming you think you have the quads to go the whole distance without worry, otherwise, whatever you can do in the early miles to save your quads.

Thanks Hippo. I'm thinking my quads will hold, I have trained most of the season going downhill. I just always seem to go out to strong in races and find myself dying at the end, I would rather not have that!

From an effort standpoint, I would run the same way as if it were a flat course. Mentally-wise, that is.

The caution here, as with any marathon, is avoiding going out too fast. I imagine this applies even more so with your downhill start.

I always recommend to folks to run the first two miles just as if it were a weekend long run: Nice, easy, and relaxed. This effectively turns your 26 mile marathon into a 24 mile marathon. There is plenty of time to catch your goal pace.

Good luck! I'm running a downhill marathon next month and I'm interested to see how it goes for you.

I'll be sure to post a race report. I hope the weather cooperates. It may rain and it may be like 90 degrees by the finish. EEk.
