Afternoon, KickMasters!!!

Gee, everyone must all be still out on their long runs!

I got a late start, as my training partner is dealing with some personal stuff these days, so I was on my own and figured some extra sleep wouldn't hurt. Today is supposed to be my last run before my 16 week 50K program starts and the start of some serious ramping up of the LRs. My chosen route from home takes me up to the top of the morraine and back... today I ran the loop in reverse of my normal direction to save the two hardest mile long hills for the downhill leg. The iPod on shuffle seemed to be in sync with the hardest of the climbs, with perfect cadance pieces for cresting the ridge and some inspirational lyrics for the last big hill on the return..........

"Gotta rise up to the top(to the top)
Cant stop(How high can you get?)
Gotta rise up to the top(to the top)
Cant stop(How high can you get?)
Cause what goes up must come down
So we gotta rise up to the Higher ground
Rise Up(Rise Up)
Rise Up(Rise Up)
Rise Up(Rise Up)
How high can you get?"

12 miles.....harder than it should have been...... but it's done!

Have a terrific day, everybody!

10 miles in IRC on local bike trail. I ran the first 2 miles with a young woman who has just started running, then she turned back to finish. It was her first time to run 4 miles. I hope I see her again because I really enjoyed meeting her. Another woman was running 8 today, so she joined us/me for that much, and then I continued on. It was a rare treat to run with other people - who miraculously happen to run my slow pace.

Funny how that works out, Heme. Paul and I had a good run at one of the local lakes, where the 8k race was supposed to be earlier. Now I see on the race series web site that it ended up being a 5k, not a 8k. I ran 10.41 miles.

Afternoon all,

A nice run with Opie this afternoon. I'm still recovering from snow shoveling earlier in the week and was really glad to get this run in. Here's a pic of Opie at our turnaround point. That's Old Route 66 in the background and makes up probably 1/3 of our run.

Day two of not running... let's see if I can make it to a week!

Still having butt pain, hamstring pain, quad and knee pain (only while sitting though), so obviously I need to keep this non-running streak going. I have moments of when my legs feel deliciously BALANCED and the same length, and it's like an epiphany... you mean people feel like this all the time???... but I'm trying to emulate tomwhite and be patient and persistent in my resting and taking care of myself. The hardest part is not getting down about it all. Oh, and yeah, the overeating isn't pretty either.

So I called the local Retro Fitness today to inquire about membership. Yeah, I think I'm finally going to suck it up and [cue ominous music] join a gym. My stationary bike just isn't serving me well as a source of crosstraining, and since buying an elliptical for the house just isn't practical (let alone won't even fit in the basement due to the height requirements), it might be the best course of action for me right now. DD is interested in joining as well, so I have to find out if they'll freeze her membership when she's away at camp over the summer. I mean, $20/month isn't expensive, but still, I'd hate to throw anymore money out the window than I need to.

Oh, but the yoga is going well, I have to say. Made it to the 8am class this morning and that was good. Might do the same tomorrow as well. Amazing how much more free time you have when you're not running, eh?

Good for you on the walking, Rinda, but sorry to hear about the neck pain. Have you figured out what triggers that tightness?

HappyFeat, I know what you mean about finding running partners that are a good fit, pacewise. That's how I met my summer running partner; we just fell in stride with each other one day in the park and started chatting, and then ran together virtually everyday after that until she went back to work in the fall as a teacher. Now we only have the weekends, and even that's been sporadic at best. But I'm working on remaining hopeful.... :)

OM, your knee pain sounds a lot like my current problem. It hurts most while sitting! The consensus of my team of health professionals is irritation and/or strain in the pes anserine location (the inside, lower part of the knee). This is where the hamstring and part of the quad muscles all join up together. My quad/hamstring strength balance got out whack after my knee surgery, and the result was the hamstring carrying more of the load while running, and the quads less. This led to too much strain at the pes anserine, and the resultant knee pain. The kicker was the more I tried to strengthen the quads with weights or exercises, the worse the knee pain got because the exercises tightened the quads and made them pull even more at the pes anserine.

What seems to be working now (knock, knock) are some non-traditional leg exercises where I am only doing resistance eccentrically. This simultaneously strengthens and stretches the muscle. I definitely need the contraptions at my gym to do them. Maybe some of the equipment at your new gym will also become helpful for you in this regard.

I did a three mile recovery run this morning as a follow-up to my first speedwork session in two months last night. I'm going to try to run 15 miles tomorrow.

Just the opposite of LSD for me today. I wanted to run faster but not do a real hard workout so I decided on 30 seconds fast with 2 minutes recovery. Based on the paces I have been running (at 3% incline) I decided 6:00 pace would be close to mile pace. I also set the recovery pace at 8:00 which would make the recovery tough as that is near the avg pace of my normal runs. After a 2 mile warmup in 16:50, I started the pickups. After doing 4 pickups, I had doubts whether I could do all 16 but I started to get in a rythm. After 10 repeats, the recovery seemed to even get a little easier. By 14 though, my legs were starting to get tired. I felt good enough to double the time on my last pickup to one minute and then did the last 4.5 minutes at 8 minute pace. Ended up with 7.76 miles in 60:00 and 1,235 ft elevation gain, The workout was a little harder than expected so I will definitely be doing an easy run tomorrow between watching the Miami Heat, Ohio State Buckeyes and the Super Bowl.
