Have a half marathon scheduled for Sunday. Race time mid 40's with rain 12 mile winds. Originally forecast for heavy rains, now they say those will be done the night before and only showers during the race.

Long sleeve tech shirt, short sleeve tech or sleeveless tech shirt? I know I can't stay dry, so just looking to stay as warm as possible.

Yes will be wearing a running hat to keep the rain off my eyes. Possibly clear lens on my sunglasses. Or no sunglasses. I don't need them to see.

Everyone is different. I would stay dry till race start. Strip down to a singlet or sleeveless tech shirt. Mid 40 degrees and rain will be cold to start but you will generate enough heat. I wouldn't want to go against the pro's advise but I wouldn't want to carry a wet long sleeve shirt that far. We'll be looking for a race report with a fashion report included.

Personally with temps in the mid-40's I'd just wear a tee shirt, shorts & hat with front brim. You should be fine once you get going.
If you prefer, you can use a lightweight water/wind resistant jacket. I have a Sugoi that is very lightweight, I love it.
You'll be finished before you know it, good luck

Pro - I prefer warmth of cold anytime except in a race. upper 30's to mid 40's is IRC as the running generates the body warmth. I'd wear gloves if it wasn't raining as I like my hands warm. Usually I have a thumb and finger out for cooling finns shortly after I'm warmed up.

When I ran a race in those conditions, I wore long sleeves and light weight gloves. For a training run, I would have been okay with this, but in the race (a 10K) I was too hot, especially my hands.

I ran a HM in 20 degree weather, and dressed as I would have for a training run in 30 F or so, and it felt about right.

I guess I would agree with ksrunr that you will generate more heat in a race and should adjust accordingly.

I've run many races in the rain! With this forecast, for me it would be short sleeved tech shirt + my lightest tech gloves + hat + longer shorts + thinnest socks.
Oh, and I would wear shoes too.

with that forecast, i would wear shorts, a tech t-shirt and sunglasses, because we all know the 3-day forecasts in la are always wrong.

(but if they're close, i'd wear a long sleeve tech with a tech t-shirt on top, goretex baseball cap, light gloves, shorts, socks, shoes.)

I wore a long sleeve tech shirt in a rainy 5 mile race in the mid 50's. What a mistake!! It was soaked and just hung and felt sooooo heavy. I think I'd layer and wear a tech short sleeve under a long sleeve shirt that you could throw off after a mile or two when you've warmed up. And stay dry before it starts if you can - throw away poncho.

Good Luck!

If it rains throughout the half marathon and you wear long sleeves, it doesn't matter that the fabric is. The sleeves will be soaked by the halfway mark and your arms will be miserable. You'll be warmer and drier with short sleeves, as odd as that may sound.

I like to wear a light weight and tight-fitting long-sleeve tech shirt in the rain. It keeps me warm without getting water logged and flapping around (if it stops raining it dries out quickly, usually within minutes). Nothing is worse than wet fabric slapping against the skin every stride. I also wear Smartwool socks to keep my feet warm and blister free even when wet. A running hat with a bill is a must, and a garage bag thrown over the whole outfit will keep you warm and dry until the race starts.

Everybody is different (thanks ks), so you have to know what suites you best in your race conditions.

It seems that the rain issue is easing, but you should still keep an eye on the wind. If it's going to be a windy but relatively dry day and the temps stay in the mid 40's, then you may want to go with long sleeves, especially if you like to be warm. If it's raining and windy, nothing will keep you dry and warm, so go with what is most comfortable in those conditions.

I hope the clouds clear and that you have a greta race!

I agree

That is short sleeve tech tee, gloves (synthetic, not cotton) and shorts. Hat would be nice in the rain.

40 rain is IRC for me.

Cash,

This must be the OC HM you're running.

I ran this race the first year with similar conditions. It was cold and windy at the start with a threat of rain. I wore a tech short sleeve T for the race and was fine. While I was waiting for the race to start, I did wear a couple of layers of throw away cotton T's and poncho I had fashioned out of a trash bag which kept me very warm until the start.

Best wishes on Sunday,
