Yesterday I ran 5 miles with Zoe with my running group, it was a VERY rare Saturday off of work. Today I ran another almost 5 miles with her thru the neighborhood. I am in full on taper mode for the DE100 in 2 weeks. More tiring than my run was taking Zoe to this new (to us) playground for 90 minutes this afternoon. Then we went to the farm down the road and chased ducks and saw animals. Boy am i pooped!

DH is off running a 12 hour race today. Perfect weather!

I'm tapering for the Wasatch 100 next weekend... so I did yardwork, installed recessed lighting, cleaned the garage, cleaned the basement, etc, etc.

My wife LOVES when I taper.

Being 1 week after my 1st 50, I decided to take it easy. 2 hrs on the AT on Saturday and then I "treated" myself with a 5k for Labor Day itself (18:31, 1st in age group). Although, honestly, I'm looking forward to getting back to putting more miles in.

However, I did get a nice view on the AT.

Once I figured out where the trail went. (hint: under/over felled tree and up mountainside).

Sounds like good times for all.

I put in a flat 18 miles on gravel roads with the Lollipop Ladies (that is what I call them, they are a bunch of BA running ladies who have schooled me in a thing or two). I have been running up hill for the last month so I wanted a break. I am taking the week easy as I my Ilias Psoas hurts and I have a big race on Saturday.

I am a little nervous as I don't know what to expect. It is called the Alyeska Climbathon and it is at the local ski resort. We run 3k (or maybe a little less) up the North Face trail gaining 2200'. At the top of the trail is food and drink then we take the tram down and run it again, and again, and again.... Goal is to see how many times you can run it in 10 hours. I am shooting for 10 times that will be equal to 22,000 feet of gain and 30k of trail. The record is 11.

Good runs and good health to everyone!

This week was my "Peak week" ahead of Hinson Lake 24 hr in 3 weeks, so it will be a gradual taper from here. 96 miles for the week which is probably a record for a week that doesn't have a 100 miler in it.

Finished up with the wonderful Long Cane 50 in South Carolina. Wish I brought my camera - I will try to steal some of my friends' shots. The weather was beautiful, the humidity kept at bay for the day. Tough challenging course, practically all single track, with next to no flat spots, it was either up or down, but not really long enough of either to get any kind of rhythm going. I finished alive and smiling, and that's pretty much all that matters. 50 mile split was pretty much on 12 hrs even. Overall time (55 miles) was 13.5 or so. Was offered a beer at 45. Couldn't say no :)

A quick plug - if you live in the Southeast, Terri Hayes' races are terrific, well supported, with no entry fees, just a donation to cover costs is requested. http://ultrasontrails.com/ She puts these races on purely for the love of the sport.

We had a huge forest fire start yesterday... it's burned a bunch of homes and much of the area where I run in the winter when I want to be on dirt roads instead of trails. 3500 people evacuated / 1000 homes / 3,500 acres. 0% contained.

It was kind of an odd weekend, at least to start off with. I ran 18 miles on the road Friday followed by 10 more on Saturday. I was really sick on Friday's run -- 3 unplanned pit stops with the trots, no idea how I didn't end up completely dehydrated and depleted of calories and in way worse shape than I ended up in. My stomach felt okay, I just kept eating my Gu's and drinking my water so would have some fluids and calories but my lower gut was NOT happy. I planned my route through town with places along the way that have rest rooms had to stop as early as 2 miles into my run...the one at the park (at about 8 miles) was locked! I had to hustle across the park to a gas station...I'm really not completely sure how I got that run done but I did. The last stop was about 3 miles from the end of my run...I finished my run, showered and was fine the rest of the day. Actually I felt pretty darn good considering how awful my run was and the fact that 18 has been my longest run in over a year. But I'm pretty glad I wasn't on the trail that day...there is way too much poison ivy around here for that to happen. I got up Saturday to run my 10 and felt fine, no gut issues and ran at a faster pace (more than a minute per mile faster) than the previous day. That was supposed to be my "run on fatigued legs" day so that seemed odd that I wasn't actually fatigued...I guess if I hadn't have been sick I probably would have had a faster run for that 18, but it was still tough. Rest day Sunday, then 9.5 on the trail yesterday. I am running more/walking less on the trail so I am picking up some speed...9 in 2:04 when I have consistently run/walked 15 minute miles on that same trail over the past several months.

Those are neat pictures Cgerber but that sucks. Hope they get it under control soon and that you and your family stay safe.

Yep, that is her whole goal - fun for the runners. This was my second of her runs, the other was Enoree Passage 40 in May - out for 20 and back for 20. Single track, fairly technical but not brutal - definitely recommended, and there will be a good chance I will run that again. Woods Ferry is a definite possibility............
