Just started a couple of weeks ago.

Doesnt hurt to walk, or even run slowly, (although I only spent a couple of minutes on the TM to see)

But... while sitting down from a standing position or standing up from a sitting position, I get a sharp pain at the under the knee cap as I am bending or straightening it. This only happens when I am weight bearing. I can be sitting or laying down and bend it any direction with no pain. There is no visible swelling or bruising and I dont remember doing anything to it. I dont feel any grinding or popping when it happens.

I have been taking Ibuprofen a couple of times a day, but it doesnt appear to be helping.

I have done some looking online but havent found anything that sounds like this.

I am about ready to start training again, from other injuries, but dont want to aggravate this, whatever it is.

So, I am looking to the collective wisdom of Kick for help with this.

Any ideas or suggestions as to what this might be or how to deal with it would be appreciated.

I sometimes get pain on the back of the knee around the lateral (outer) tendon, is that where yours is or is it square center?

It actually seems to be more around the outside and along the bottom of my knee cap. Definitely not the back of my knee or the outside.

I have upped my Ibuprofen intake to 800mg 3x a day. Hopefully that will help. I have high hopes!

The pain is in the front of my knee, but under the knee cap, not in the back of my leg. Sorry it didnt explain it well.

I had read that meri, I dont know. I didnt do the test for it, and I havent been running at all, so it just didnt make sense. But when DH gets home, I will try it and see if thats the answer.

I just got up a minute ago though and the most pain was towards the outside of my knee, but still under the knee cap.

I dont know, its just frustrating!

That looks close. I guess I would fall into the "older adult, arthritis in the knee cap" catagory!

Not all of the symptoms fit though. There isnt any tenderness in my knee, just pain when bending. But this is closer than anything else I have found. I guess I will just continue to be an Ibuprofen junkie and see what happens. Gotta hit the road, so I will reread it tonight and see what else I need to do.

Thanks!

Have you tried a cho-pat knee strap? It seems to help my kneecap to track properly when I was having knee issues.

I don't know if the knee strap will help your problem, there are so many different things it could be, but I don't think it can harm your knee either.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, please!

Just saw my Dr and asked her about my knee, she looked at it, felt it and said, yup, arthritis. Suggested Glucosamine and said that running will HELP it!

Thanks for all the great input here! It helped a ton!

So, its all good!

.....as will cycling, swimming, walking or elliptical work (and any number of other exercises). What you want to do is stimulate blood flow to the joint.

Sending happy knee vibes!

I know the thread has run its course - but ...

I have a similar thing where - standing / walking / running - no pain. Sitting or sleeping - man does it hurt - basically under the knee cap.

Just to be sure - I suppose I will see the Doc next week after the marathon this weekend.

I happen to have a bottle of Flex-a-min

Glucosamine Chondroitin plus MSM - I had bought it about a year ago, but never started to take it.

Funny the pain started in my taper from high mileage for this marathon - the less I run the more it hurts.

those are the symptoms I had years ago. I was told that I had "bursitis" along with "tendonitis". The fluid of the bursitis allowed me to run virtually pain-free through the tendonitis, but it hurt later because the body "now" had to get rid of this excess fluid and heal. I couldn't see any swelling and of course I ran like this for months (where it hurt for about 5 minutes and then it didn't). Eventually, my body couldn't get rid of the fluid and sure enough the knee showed swelling. Then it rapidly progressed with lots of fluid and my doctor refused to "tap" it eventhough I couldn't walk at this point. (good call on the old coot's part, but it was mean at the time) "damn runners, you don't know when to quit, this is going to take 3 months for the swelling to disappear and you'll gain 10 pounds and hate yourself for making your body run"
