Symptoms:
1. Intermittant mild to sharp pain on the lower outside of my left knee.
2. A sense that I dont have the strength & stability in my left knee to walk up or down stairs.
3. Can only sleep or rest in certain positions, otherwise when I move my knee, sharp pain.

It doesn't seem to hurt nor flare up when I run.

Any thoughts?

Dennis, this sounds like ITBS to me, except for the part that running does not make it worse. When I had ITBS, I first felt the pain about 5 miles into a run. Over the next several hours, it really tightened up, and I couldn't run more than a mile or so without it bothering me. Running and stairs hurt more than anything.

On the positive side, working through ITBS was a great education. If you determine that you are dealing with ITBS, there will be lots of good advice here to help you through it.

Hi Dennis - I've had a couple bouts of fairly severe ITBS as well. I'd say if this is something that happened real recently (say, within the 48-72 hours), it could be ITBS.

If this has been going on awhile, I'd tend to think it isn't. With all my cases of ITBS, the first one-to-two days would be similar to what you experienced, but afterward the pain dissipated and would only flare up during runs. Plus, I didn't notice any stability issues even when my ITBS was at its most painful, and that would concern me as to whether you something structurally damaged in the knee like a ligament or cartilege.

If its something where it bothers you while you're sleeping and has been lasting more than a few days, I'd definitely see a doctor. Good luck to ya
