It sounds like it may be patello-femoral knee pain syndrome. It is very common (46% of knee problems in phsyio treatment are due to this)
Pain is there only when the leg is extended and with weight (hence going down stairs)? Feels like the knee is 'catching'?

I am experiencing the same thing. Ran 4 marathons last year without a problem and then went bowling and must have done something to my trailing knee becaue I have not been able to run for four weeks. I blame the extreme sport of bowling--while physiotherapist suggests that the running made me vulnerable to it.

Have been going to physio and Using ice, knee support, Ibuprofein. If it persists will explore where there is some cartilige involved. Good luck in your recovery.
