Shape Up Somerville RD and Coach’s report…

--Today was La Tortuga’s big day as Race Director for the Shape Up Somerville Race / Walk and get off your @ss event.

--Lou aka WillRunForBeer took a big step up from performer to coach by suggesting how to pace.

I have to say I think she is a bang up race director! Directions were good. Sign in was a breeze. Parking (albeit early on a Sunday) was ample. Police were in good spirits (please explain how to pull this one off). And … get this… with me signed in, the sunny skies did not instantly darken, blow hurricane force winds, or deluge us with floods. She’s the best!

I do need to mention though, that whoever signed up as the La T fashion consultant? Well, you might want leave this event out of your portfolio. The checkerboard brown and turkey turd yellow skirt did have a certain appeal, but to exactly who, I am not sure. (more on this later.)

We had a great boomer turnout! Henrun and Marge of course, they are almost local; MaryT and ….Ted(?) too. I think got that right, and later we’ll see if his photo skills are good. Kameele ???? (Kevin), and Coastwalker (Jay) were both in good form, and pleasant too. (I may go into this more later.)

So, we have a race to run. Kevin and I compared numbers and we agreed that to keep things simple, I would take the lead with the additional responsibility of having to write a race report (that was 100% pro Kevin), and he is a top notch guy, great competitor, and a great family man (more on this later).

I wanted to follow spareribs advice and warmup by running the course. But I found myself a little behind schedule after spending a little too much time chit-chatting with Marge. There was also the small issue of having no clue how to navigate the circumvoluted course with out a police escort. (this will become more clear later.)

I also wanted to follow WillRunForBeer’s advice to run 6:15’s but luckily I had recovered from the previous night’s heavy drinking. I did a few last minute warmup jogs with some strides thrown in. I eyeballed the competition and sized up one guy in a yellow shirt in particular as ‘the’ competition. So I asked him directly what his first mile would be. He didn’t know; I didn’t trust him. He asked me the same and I was completely honest.

The gun went off, handled perfectly by La T and her powered megaphone. I led the race for 5 feet or so. Yellow shirt passed me then. Within 1/2M he had a 50yd lead. I was running 6:00 pace. I decided right away to switch from an extrovert, in his socks, shadow and drafting strategy, to a more introverted style of watching him from a respectable distance.

I did manage to hold this polite distance constant once the [email protected] slowed to human speeds. I heard footsteps and other noises which I won’t go into behind me. I was kinda worried. (surprise alert) I was stunned when at 1.5M yellow shirt pulled off and just quit. It was pretty obvious that he had a major malfunction. He was hardly working before this. Now it was me and those pesky noisemakers behind me. There were no mile markers so it was me and the breeze and Lou to try and tell pace. I felt ok and was weighing the pros and cons of pushing harder vs hanging happy and maybe having a push if it came to holding someone off.

On highlight of leading a race is the “RD factor”. Several times the police cruiser, lights flashing, would hold in an intersection to insure cross traffic was stopped. I came within 3 feet of being able to rap on the truck of his car! This has been a secret goal of mine since RDRacing had to do this tp speed up the pace car. Well, I failed. Came close, but failed.

Ok, let’s wrap things up. I came to the last turn and was pretty confident I had it. I never did look back in the entire race. I crossed the line in 19:25 by my watch and 19:24 gun time. This is 6:15 pace (thanks to WRFB for the expert pace advice). I think with more pressure I could have pushed to 6:14 or so. 1st place overall. First ever for me. So big day.

We had a great showing on the podium as a group.
Tops and on the podium for every age group was …
Kirsten! RD and handing out medals! Nice job!
Pro – 1st OA at 19:24
Marge – 1st in AG at 29:13
HENRY – 1st in AG at 32:07
MaryT – 2nd in AG at 33:43
I hope I didn’t miss anyone.
I know Kevin nailed his goal.
