What: Killer Dunes 2 Miles of Sand

When: July 4th, 2007

Where: Jockey’s Ridge Sand Dunes, Outer Banks, NC

Details:

My family owns a house in the Outer Banks of N.C. Every year during the summer my wife and I take the three girls down for two weeks of fun in the sun. My running career started last year the day we returned from the trip. So this year’s trip would be my first as a “runner.”

Before heading down I researched some routes. I also thought it might be fun to find a local race, if there happened to be one. After a little internet searching it seemed the only race being held while we were going to be in the area was the “Killer Dunes 2 Mile Foot Race.”

The race is held on the Jockey’s Ridge sand dunes, which are the largest dunes on the east coast. Having been to the dunes multiple times I knew any race there would certainly present a challenge.

I e-mailed the race director asking him for some further information about the course. He replied that the race was held in hot, humid, sandy and hilly conditions. He said it was only a 2-mile course but that it felt like 5 when racing it.

We had been at the beach for a few days and I had gotten a few runs in. The day before the race I was somewhat apprehensive but decided to go for it. I figured the worst thing that would happen would be I walked 2-miles in the sand.

Weather the morning of the race was almost ideal. The heat held back and it was in the low 80s, sunny with light winds.

Before the race got I underway I had a chance to talk to the race director and the owner of the Outer Banks Running Company store.

It was then I learned that the course record for the race was 18xx. And that last year’s winning female runner finished in 28xx. Remember, this is only a two mile race. I heard several marshals who were OBX running club members say they thought that running the OBX marathon might be easier that running this course. I felt a little sick to my stomach.

Walking to the starting line I couldn’t help but wonder what had gotten myself into.

Team Greenberg was there of course to support me as always.

After picking up my t-shirt and downing some water we were asked to line up at the start.

The race director began to give us a pre-race briefing. Two things stood out. He first informed us that this course is probably the hardest cross-country course in the country. Great! Then he showed us the direction, which we were to take off and informed us that we were to start the race by heading up “Mother’s Mountain.” To which I said “Mountain!” WTF!

The course was actually very well marked. They had placed red flags every 10-15 feet along the entire course. I guess they didn’t want anyone getting lost.

After the Pledge of Allegiance and a blessing the gun quickly sounded and we were off.

Any hopes that I had that the course would be run on packed sand were quickly dashed as we began climbing the mountain. The sand was loose, fine and grainy and of course tough to run on.

After the first large climb the course leveled off a bit and then consisted of several uphill climbs with a few downhills and some flat running thrown in for good measure. One hill was so steep the only way up in was on your hands and knees!

Many of the downhills were just as steep and the only way down them seemed to be to throw oneself down the hill and hope and pray your footing held on each step.

There was a water station at mile 1 which I reached in 11 minutes or so. I quickly downed some water and continued on. The last stretch of the course featured another mountain climb. Here I am coming to the top of it.

Then it was downhill and flat to the finish.

I reached the finish in 22:09. Good for 36th place out of 100 or so.

All in all it was a fun race. It was certainly a challenge and I’d probably do it again. The small distance of the race (2 miles) made it a challenge that although hard wasn't terrible and didn't ruin me for the rest of the trip, or even for that day.

LOL.

I even did a sort of "double take" when I looked at the Garmin at the 1 mile mark. Even during the race I'd look at my current pace and think "I've got to be running faster than that! Well my legs were moving hard and fast but they were just getting stuck in the sand!

Welcome back. I like the sound of courses that make you run miles slower than me.

Indeed.

I passed her shortly after and she ended up finishing directly after me. We exchanged high fives.

Great report! That race looks fun. What were this year's winning times?

I opted for a 5K in Va. Beach on the 4th, but maybe next year will tackle Mother's Mountain. I go out to Kitty Hawk & Kill Devil Hills for runs once in a while and yes, that loose sand is challenging terrain.

Enjoy the rest of your OBX time!

I got a 1/4 mile of that stuff at the end of a trail race I did earlier this year. In big ass trail shoes, that wasn't fun.

2 miles worth must've been pretty brutal - congrats on the race, and as usual, a fine race report to boot.

(BTW, I agree with the others - nice positioning)

Yep, after reading that shoes were required and that mesh uppers were NOT recommended I decided to wear my trail shoes too. I think that was probably a mistake. They were heavy and didn't do a good job at keeping the sand out. I saw many people in plain old running shoes and several in flats and light weights. My shoes were quite full of sand at the end.

Wow, what a cool race! I'm with Heather, though, I'm sure I'd be running 20+ minute miles on that course too.
