I was wondering if you'd think a 'book club' forum area would be of interest here? The thought would be to use this as a means to have 'book worms' read and discuss books - and have them buy the books through our amazon account.

Dual functions - one to actually provide a 'deeper' level of discussion of interesting books (doesn't have to be running related) and secondary - create a revenue stream for the site.

Thoughts? (feel free to be as frank as you care to be)

That's what I was thinking - Would you be willing to take the lead on it? Choose a book and then invite others to buy it - then lead the discussion? Or do we have another volunteer?

Is there any way to get the amazon account set up so that anything purchased from them, though our link, provides revenue?

Or are we limited to the things that altoids has put up in the amazon link?

I know that torque recently did a book exchange sort of thread and lots of people enjoyed it. I was just thinking that there might be lots of different discussions going on at the same time, with people talking about different books.

If there is an entire forum set up for it,, I just doubt that the discussion will stick to one book.

There may be a main focus book at any given time, but I think there may also be other discussions going on at the same time.

Maybe we could do a sticky for people to post what they want to buy and then we could add it???? (Could altoids keep up with that though?)

Hence, the reason I was asking my question.

I added a new Amazon window that has a 'search' function. This should work. Try it.

Yeah, it worked fine when I tried to do a search for a CD.

So anything that is found through that search window will generate income? That would be great!

If so, we need to let people know about it.... I know lots of people but stuff through amazon.

I am seeing an area for amazon search, but there isn't a search box there for me?

Nice idea. In addition to the the search box (which is very versatile!) I could make a category for books people are discussing, or even make a smaller widget for individual books, so people have a visual of the book cover to click on. It can be posted anywhere you can post html.

The one on the front page? Or the one in "The Store" area? Do you have a ad blocker turned on?

I can see the Store and zazzle stuff...

I just fixed it.

Apparently my adblocker had it on a list of things they thing most people want to block. I took off the filter and now I can see it fine!

Thanks

I wonder how many others block all the ads?

So.. Do we want to try this? Perhaps - select a book and open the forum with that?

Thoughts????

Sounds great Rich. I think that we could have a focus book for each month, with a month lead time to get the book. For example, we'd say "The Kite Runner" was the book for March now.

Once a year we'd have a running book pick, or maybe more?

We'd welcome discussion on all sorts of books. A thread for each title.

I always like to know what the purpose of an activity is. It helps to scope it.

If our purpose is to drive revenue to support the site, the books chosen should be widely popular or at least popular among the folks that frequent this site.

If our purpose is educational, we should slant book choice towards non fiction and works of literature.

If the purpose is chatting about books, I'd suggest the PRT would work pretty well for that.

So, what's the book club's charter?

Two Fold: Primary is to hopefully get them to buy via our link - but also bring additional depth to discussions. I don't think the PRT is the best place for it as the topics will fall off too quickly. I do think a sub-forum in the PRT is the best place.

I'd like to find a way to gauge interest. Perhaps a "Poll" in the PRT? Thoughts?
