Lazy Saturday morning, what's a working stiff to do but shuffle through his record collection and kick back. A bit too early for a brew, but I've got my feet up and I'm grooving to music by William Byrd. Of course there aren't any recordings of this dude, but he grew up by the banks of the old muddy Thames and made quite a name for himself, basically stirring things up with his mean polyphony. Wrote himself some sacred and secular tunes, busted a few chops with his consort music. He wasn't no ass-kisser, but he managed to please both the Catholics and Protestants and kept his head and the queen's favour through it all. Man could the guy write. Yup. Got me some Tallis Scholars on the platter and then next up I think I'll move over to hear some Julian Bream - man can that white guy play the lute - work his way through them love tunes of the 16th century.

Gonna be a real renaissance type of morning, you know?

I would've never thought to put "groove" and "William Byrd" in the same sentence.

I'm not familiar with Bream, but I once had this cd and enjoyed it very much:http://www.amazon.com/Virtuoso-Lute-Music-Italy-England/dp/B00000169Y/ref=sr_1_5?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1297641169&sr=1-5

Well now little lady, let me tell you something about them Renaissance musicians. They don't make 'em much like ol' Billy Byrd anymore. Heck the whole Virginal school died with him, and nobody played keyboards really for another 200 years! And talk about your crossroads experiences, this guy is a Saint of the Episcopal church in the States, even though he was an open Papist!

Bream is a Brit, and for a Pom he can play that Lute like there's no tomorrow. I know, I know, you're probably saying that the Lute is really an Oud, a musical instrument from them there Moslem lands, but even a broken clock is right twice a day, once if it's digital. Now see, he can translocate and play with himself. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S1ZiEGhap4Q&feature=related

For Byrd at his down and dirty best, try this version by the Tallis Scholars. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G4rWsH1hkQ8 See, the music was so far ahead of its time that the sound doesn't match the pictures.

Time for one of the buds and some tunes on the spinner.
