M'kay, don't get me wrong, I do like Tony Dungee as a coach and he seems to be a good person. BUT, he should stay far far far far far far far away from doing any kind of commentary. I watched some of the CowPerson's game last night (but only because I love to laugh at small penis man's misfortune) and say Coach Dungee doing commentary and honestly...my great grandfather who's been cold and in the ground for 20 years could do a better broadcast from his coffin than Tony!

He and Troy Aikman should've never been given any kind of contract to do anything with television...just because they were a good coach or a good player does not mean that that goodness will translate well to being a good telecaster, not every ex-player/coach can be a Jimmy Johnson or a JB or a Terry Bradshaw or a Howie Long (oooooo my heart just fluttered).

Dear NBC, please don't renew your contract with Coach Dungee next season, despite his vast football knowledge, he does NOTHING but bring your broadcast down.

Dear FOX, please don't renew Troy Aikman's contract, he annoys me.

Howie Long, Terry Bradshaw definitely.

Tony Kornheiser bleh.

I have to admit, I love Jon Gruden as a commentator. He's awesome.

And as a woman can I ask a totally sexist question and not get beat up? What is with all the chicks at Sportscenter lately? I am ok-ish with the sideline reporting, but there are a lot of chicks on sportscenter.

I know we have a lot of commentators who have never played the sport they cover, but I really enjoy listening to people who have played the sport.

I'm not a big fan of women commentators either. It just sits wrong with me. And I'm a chick! Who loves sports mind you.

Terry Bradshaw was a Woodlawn Knight while I was a Bossier Bearkat in high school. We never beat Woodlawn while he was QB there.

And then he was a Louisiana Tech Bulldog while I was a Northwestern Louisiana State Demon. Didn't beat him there either.

I don't remember him playing against the Saints very much but he probably won those games too.

But at least I've got more hair than he does (he is 3 years older than me.) And it's great to have a Louisiana boy broadcasting NFL games.

As for Howie Long, I like his truck commercials more than his NFL commentating but he's not bad as a commentator either.

GF says to me, "When did they replace all the guys asking inane questions on the sideline with good looking women asking inane questions on the sideline?"

The mistake is thinking just because somebody was involved in the pro game he knows how to sell. Big mistake! Most players have no clue about their game. They don't know the history they don't know how to keep you clued to a tv. Coachs are even worst. You take a fan who has been into the NFL and knows all about Abner Haynes the first stud of the old AFL, he's seen Jimmy Brown play. He remembers the Baltimore Colts, Dallas Texans, LA Rams, St.Louis Cardinals. A league with no....Seahawks, Buc's, Jags and Panthers. A guy who made a living with his ability to sell. Yep, a football guru who worked as a salesman. Perfect! Jocks and coachs....nope!

Now before somebody..."so you know more about the game than the players and coachs?" My answer......yep! Keep in mind these players and coachs are into one game a week, while a real fan is into all of them.

I'm inclined to agree, but imho, any man who has played football has a better insight into the sport than most women. (they have yet to find the right female commentator in my opinion). It would be like putting Howie Long at a gymnastics meet. Sure, eye candy, but the dude would probably know little about the sport.

One of the best books I've ever read: The Best Game Ever Played by Mark Bowden. It rocks. About the Baltimore Colts. And how they had day jobs and played football at night. Vince Lombardi, Tom Landry, Frank Gifford all make appearances as young bucks. If you listen to the book they do snippets of the game and it is pretty awesome.

I'm always impressed by young athletes who are students of the history of the game Probably because it's so rare. It's a lot easier with baseball because of it's longevity and the fact that the best sports literature has historically come from there, but there is lots from all sports and it would be nice if every athlete had as much knowledge of the sport that pays him millions as he does about xbox.

I think you need to have played the game but the high school level will do. Everything is relative. You do need to understand the mentality. Know what a hit feels like.

I've heard about that book you mentioned. Haven't read it however.

What you mention is so rare. I think your opinion is true among any career field--especially politics. It seems we have so few politicians who are students of the history of our nation, our world, and our universe.

Interesting sidelight to this - as far as I know, the NFL Hall of Fame does not have a person was has been inducted strictly as a broadcaster...and I guess if they were, they would be inducted as a contributor.

On the other hand, the other three major sports (baseball, hockey, basketball) do have broadcasters inducted into their HOFs.

Other than my local broadcasters, maybe that's why I don't really have a particular voice attached to football games in general? The closest I can think of are those who span the spectrum of sports in general (for example, Al Michaels), one who was inducted into the HOF as a coach (John Madden), and someone who I've never heard broadcast a game but I've heard dozens of times in all those NFL Films segments (Harry Kalas))
