I've always heard this is great exercise. Does anyone do this? I was thinking about tacking some one minute intervals onto some of my workouts.

I used it in classes when I taught kickboxing. It's killer and would work great for intervals (unless you continually trip over it and have to re-start and re-start etc.)

SGH, I was thinking of doing a minute of jumping rope, with a minute of some sort of weight lifting in between. Upper body stuff, probably. Maybe some of those non-girly pushups.

You can make it into an awesome interval or circuit workout.

Alternate 1 min JR with other things -- emphasize large-muscle movements to keep the HR up: squats, lunges, push ups, dips on bench, crunches on the ball, jumping jacks, arm curl with plies, etc. Repeat the cycle to get 20-30 minutes.

Then work up to 2 min. jumping rope!

I jump rope, coach assigned, i do not like it. She started me off with three sets of 50 jumps. Just getting thru 10 was hard for the first couple of months Now she either has me do 5 minutes or 3 sets of 150's. I trip up on the rope a lot. I have purchased a few different types of ropes and the cotton one works the best for me.

I would really like to get good at doing that, seeing as how it would make for a good workout filler when doing stuff like abs and pushups and whatnot. I think I may have to stop by Wal-mart or whatever local merchandise monster is near and pick up one.

You experts out there reccommend just normal jumping or practice the runnign one where you hop from leg to leg...that one is just too complicated for me right now.

When I was jumping, I would have to double, too

I liked the feel of the heavier, thicker rubber "ropes", though.
And it wasn't easy to find ropes long enough for me either

Hmm...I havent jumped in a while...wouldn't be a bad idea to get back to it..

Ok, I got a rope. I found a good little routine in this month's Fitness magazine that incorporates interval training and jumping rope is one of the cardio options. So I am going to try it tomorrow!

I've been jumping rope at the gym as a warm up and also as intervals. Still need to go get one for home. There's a really nice guy at the gym who helped me get the basics better then I was doing, I was jumping too high and landing too hard. It sure does get the heart pumping in no time at all.

When I was a kid I LOVED jumping rope. I did criss crosses, and other tricks. I liked it so much I wrote a haiku about it. Specifically, about "Jump rope for heart" a school-wide jump rope festival. If I remember correctly, it went something like this:

I like to jump rope.
Jumping rope for heart is fun.
Let's all jump rope now!
