From the Boston Globe:

Quote:

Senator John Kerry said today he will voluntarily cut a check to the state of Massachusetts for some $500,000 in sales tax for a yacht he purchased in Rhode Island earlier this year.

"We’ve reached out to the Massachusetts Department of Revenue and made clear that, whether owed or not, we intend to pay the equivalent taxes as if the boat’s home-port were currently in Massachusetts," Kerry said in a statement released this afternoon. "That payment is being made promptly."

Kerry has been dogged by questions in recent days by questions about whether he purposely tried to evade taxes in his home state by listing the $7 million yacht's home berth as Newport, R.I., when he actually intended to use the boat at his summer home on Nantucket. His yacht purchase was first reported in the Boston Herald.

When this story first came out a few days ago, it looked like Kerry was trying to save that $500k in taxes (plus an additional $70k every year) by keeping the yacht in Rhode Island.

Kerry is married to one of the wealthiest women in the world, so half a mil to him is pocket change. Docking a boat in Rhode Island is certainly not illegal, and I'm sure he's not the only rich person in Massachusetts doing it.

So, is he a good guy because he's ponying up the $500k now, even though he legally doesn't have to? Or is he a hypocrite who rails against "tax cuts for the rich" while he looks for every loophole for himself, only paying the $500k after getting caught?

Or both?

He's a politician so that pretty much guarantees his hypocrite status. Is there another reason besides the tax issue why he would want to dock his boat in Rhode Island?

It occures to me that if I wanted to dock an ocean going boat it would be pretty much a given that I couldn't dock it in my home state of Ohio.

I think this has perhaps been made to be a bigger issue than it deserves to be.

As you pointed out, he is quite rich and 500k is indeed pocket change .

I personally take all the tax breaks (and there aren't many in Canada) that I legally can. Why on earth we'd expect rich people not to do the same is a bit beyond me.

...and I think he's a weinie for bowing to pressure and sending MA half a mil...although he was probably carrying that much in his wallet so it really is much ado about not much.

My point was not that he's a rich guy taking a tax break. If it's legal (which this is), that's perfectly fine. My point is that he's one of the loudest voices of the "no tax cuts for the rich" party while he's trying to find tax loopholes for himself.

In other words, shouldn't he be out there setting an example? Shouldn't he be paying all the taxes he can before a newspaper catches on to him and guilts him into it?

Or is that asking too much? Stupid question, I guess...
