1. Why do you run?
Initially, I ran for improving my health and lowering cholesterol levels. Health is still an important aspect, but I’ve always enjoyed wandering in the woods and covering distance. So trail running was a perfect fit. I enjoy the extended periods of solitude and cultivating the inner life, and the concreteness of a ten-mile run all in one. I also enjoy the camaraderie at races.
For me right now;

Running is the new black,
A gavotte with mystery,
The primal directive,
The all-consuming struggle.
The body,
The battle
Of Gravity and ID.

2. What is your greatest accomplishment?
This one’s hard. I started thinking and still couldn’t come up with a thing. So I’m 50+ -better get crackin’. When I was 20 something I figured by now I’d have everything -Life, the Universe, Existance, pretty much figured out. But it seemed to get harder as I went along. So I settled for finding a good balance between family, family business, community and myself. And maybe I’ve made it, but I’m rarely satisfied with my efforts.
I still haven't ruled out that Life, the Universe, Existence thing either.

3. What is your motto/theme song?
This will really date and frame me. The opening chant from the “The Revealing Science of God”, Tales from Topographic Oceans by Yes, from 1974 always pumps feeling through me and reminds me of how fantastic it is to exist: conscious, and physical.

4. How do you deal with bad runs?
I don’t have many. I come to Kickrunners.com, mope and whine a little until someone cheers me up.

5. Do you reward yourself for good runs?
Not often, they are kind of the rewards themselves, but,
How?
BROWNIES!!! (or sometimes a corndog :roll_eyes

6. Who do you admire most?
Its tough to really single anyone out, my wife is the most obvious. She has become an AMAZING person over our 30 years. Somebody should write a book about her. But generally I admire middle school teachers, hermits, monks and mendicants, runners, nurses, bus drivers, doctors and cooks, judges, lawyers, and protesters, farmers and artists. I always try to see something admirable in everybody. Special shout out to Kepler and Euclid too.

7. What is the greatest advice you have ever received?
To love one another.

8. What do wish you had learned younger?
Just to be happy.

9. What do you wish you could do but can't?
Dance, but that base jumping looks kinda fun too.

10. How would your friends describe your personality?
My favorite was “JJ, you’re a closet extrovert”.

11. What do you wear running? favorite outfit?
Trail shoes and Smartwool socks pretty consistently, plus injinji for 12+. Have started experimenting with Bite Sandals. Shorts above 40*, CWX tights below 30*, in between just based on mood and sun, how long I’ll be out and such. Hydration pack for 12+ miles, a hand-held or two otherwise. Compression top base layer, more tech over that per weather. I’ve just started wearing a Utilikilt on some runs and it shows a lot of promise for running in the woods. Bandana most times. Gloves below 45*. Garmin 305.

12. What has been your favorite race?
I’ve only toed the line ten times, and often it’s just what ever I ran last. But I’m really looking forward to running the Springmaid Splash 10K Trail Race again next August.

13. Do you have a goal race right now?
Yes.

14. What makes you happy?
Good food & friends, wandering in the wild with my wife, a good joke or funny story, storms, rainbows, waterfalls, wildflowers, ravens, a bonfire, the smell of a rose, running, listening to a mountain stream. I’m happy a lot these days.

15. Tell us one interesting thing about you that you haven't said (at least not often) on this forum in the past.
I worked on a graduate degree in musicology for a year, but never finished.

16. Tell us one interesting thing about another user of this forum that has not been posted (at least not often) on this forum in the past (make sure the other person will not object to posting the info!).
Sorry, my info about everyone here comes from here. I’m gonna try to rectify that.

13. Do you have a goal race right now?
Yes, but I like to be a smartass sometimes, Mountain Masochist Trail Run (50M) 2008.

So...answer #9, any specific type of dancing or just to look good when random songs come on? I'd love to go ballroom classes and learn how to swing as well.

Thanks guys,
I'd love to run with any and all of you anytime.

Antag, I'll definitely look you up for that beer when I make it to LA, I'll even buy the even number rounds. Might even let you try on the kilt.

Soli, the most fun "dancing" I ever had was at festival night in a Greek Church. It was sprial dancing, but they were doing some other stuff that was too complicated for me to learn that looked fun.

Arrojo, it was the brownies that gave it away, wasn't it?

Tam (and Johnny and Fattozig), I'm headed for Cresent City area for some big tree running in the summer.
Is that a long ways from you guys?
