So far mine are too young to make poor choices. But my nieces and nephews are making them here and there. And yes, it is sad. Right now one of my nieces seems to have suffered some sort of mental breakdown. And yet, she refuses to believe she's got any issues at all. It's frustrating and upsetting.

When they are older, the reprercusions are bigger, but I can only know that my kids have been given all the information I know possible on the topic. In the end though, I can't deny their own experiences and I'm certainly not going to kill myself trying to control something I have no possible way of controling.

When my first serious boyfriend and I broke up, I was heartbroken. My Dad took me out for ice cream and told me the most painful thing in the world was to watch your children be in pain. I thought he was mistaken. Boy, was he right.

My dad let me sip some of his Coors Light out of the can when I was in the third grade...can that be considered child endangerment?

Quote:

We all learn by our mistakes. It is painful to watch you children learn this firsthand, but it is part of growing up and maturing.

Agree.. this thing about raising them and protecting them until they hit teenage years.. then slowly letting them go a bit at a time AGH!!!! My kids are good smart kids .. but even so one made a choice and was led to doing something unwise .. which fortunately was pretty minor.. but still disturbing because I NEVER expected that they would do something a little risky.

But in the end it was useful to allow us to talk more about trust, choices and consequences.

I was highly criticized when I (a school Principal) "let" my son drop out of high school. There was no letting. I could have kicked him out of the house, but he got a job and worked hard at it and didn't get into trouble. He was convinced he was stupid and nothing anyone could do could convince him otherwise. He had to find that out for himself.

Now he's 25, finished high school at 24 and stood first in his class in first year Engineering. He doesn't think he's stupid anymore. :D

Not just kids- Siblings too. I have an older sister who doesn't make a lot of great decisions. It's painful to see her make poor choices.
