I worked out in the Y last night, and wondered "Where am I? I don't recognize most of these people!"<br><br>
And in 4-6 weeks, many will be gone again. <img alt="sad.gif" src="http://files.kickrunners.com/smilies/sad.gif">

Last night there were more people at my gym than I've ever seen. It's a new gym, so it's been empty up until now! There were probably 8 other people there with me. All in all, not too bad!

I had the same thought!! I recognized three (out of about 50) people in the fitness center, but then both of my classes had the regulars in them. One woman came to the first class that I haven't seen in a long time, but other than that it was the same old regulars I know and love! I have a feeling I won't be saying the same thing next week, though.

I've managed to avoid mine so far. It helps that I have a gym in my building with really good treadmills, ellipticals a, a 3 station universal and full set of barbells with a weight bench. And apparently my neighbors didn't make resolutions <img alt="biggrin.gif" src="http://files.kickrunners.com/smilies/biggrin.gif"><br>
I want to do a weight training class there tonight so we'll see how crowded that is...but I am running outside at lunchtime.<br><br>
It only lasts 3-5 weeks before it settles down again, then picks up again around May.

Every year.<br>
Most will be gone in 2 weeks. The rest will be gone by the end of Discovery's 6 (<img alt="cool.gif" src="http://files.kickrunners.com/smilies/cool.gif"> week body challenge.<br><br>
Hang in there, you'll get your gym back soon.

It's so easy to get a swelled ego. These people think those of us who work out year round are totally badass, even the ugly guy over in the corner who is just a fat hippo.<img alt="wave.gif" src="http://files.kickrunners.com/smilies/wave.gif"><br><br><img alt="smile.gif" src="http://files.kickrunners.com/smilies/smile.gif">

New Year's resolutions always have the appeal of newness. When the newness wears off, sometimes the motivation does too. However, some will hang in no matter. Aren't there at least one or two January newcomers who then hang in and become active?<br><br>
Or there will be others who make a few new starts before one of them succeeds.<br><br>
What would be interesting is to find out (there must be studies of this) what keeps people going once they start and then gyms could adopt practices that encourage people to persevere.

There is enough research on exercise adherence to increase the likelihood that people will continue to use the services throughout the year though, honestly, that isn't best for business. Folks who come in, pay for 12-24 months of memberships, usually for a couple, and use the facilities for several weeks really help pay the bills for gyms.<br><br>
Think of you walking into the supermarket, writing a check for groceries for the next year and then never returning to pick them up.<br><br>
Most of the better gyms use exercise adherence research to keep customers who do things like working out with personal trainers and the like.

Our YMCA's use resolutions to their advantage<br><br>
Join on 1/1 - No joining fee<br>
Join 1/2 - 1/18 = 1/2 the joining fee<br><br>
Same thing every year - More people that aerobic equipment until end of January - by Mid February - back to normal.<br><br>
I read where the aevrage person keeps their resolution for 6 weeks.<br><br>
I find the morning is much less impacted than after work and weekends.<br><br>
The worste part is they do not understand proper etiquette. They will do a 30 second set on a weight machine and then sit there for 2 minutes until they do their next one. So instead of 2 or 3 people sharing the equipment increasing throughput they bog the system down.<br><br>
Any way rant over.

I read the earlier part of the non-gowers subsidizing the rest of us ...<br><br>
It would be scary if all the members showed up all the time - they would need 3x the equipment / building etc - I would probably cost $200 a month for a membership -

At the Y I used to go to, it used to be that by February the resolutioners were gone. But the last couple of years that I was a member, the resolutioners would stick around until May. It was crazy. I'm glad that people were actually sticking to their resolutions, but it was so frustrating to have that kind of chaos every day at the gym. I eventually ended up cancelling my member ship and I now work out at home.

It really only pissed me off when they would take up all the space and equipment in the classes I regularly attended. It was not fun to go to my regular body scuplt class and find only 2 pound weights remaining and even worse when they would reserve the spin bikes (so I didnt get one) and then not even bother to cancel or show up.<br><br>
I also hate when people stroll on the treadmills on perfectly nice days. If you are going to spend an hour walking 25 minute miles and BS with your buddy just head outside for a walk...but that sort of bugs me all the time.

Maybe I'm vain. Maybe I have self-esteem issues. Maybe I just care too much what other people think.<br><br>
But I worry that people think <b><i>I'M</i></b> a New Year's Resolutioner.. because I've still got a lotta fat/weight to lose. <img alt="sad.gif" src="http://files.kickrunners.com/smilies/sad.gif"><br><br>
I choked while I was doing core last night. There were a lot more people in there than usual. I was lying on the mat and I suddenly forgot every core move I knew, with the exception of the very basic stuff. <img alt="uhoh2.gif" src="http://files.kickrunners.com/smilies/uhoh2.gif"> What an amateur! <img alt="sad2.gif" src="http://files.kickrunners.com/smilies/sad2.gif">
