I am looking at making my hotel reservations now and trying to figure out where is the best place to make reservations without breaking the bank. The hotels on the website are $140+ and I am sure I can find some cheaper.

Would it be a nightmare to stay on the other side of the Ohio River? I am concerned about traffic.

Family will also be traveling with me. So making it easy to get around for the wife is a plus.

Something on the course would be great too.

I would appreciate any advice you can give me.

Thx

consider a time share or rental house/condo. Not sure if that's an option, but for Cda I could buy a house big enough to sleep 10 for almost same money as 1 hotel room for 4 and cheaper than for 6 (which is what we need)

Hi! I live on the Indiana side and work in downtown Louisville. The other side of the River is not a bad idea at. all. New Albany and Clarksville are closest. Corydon is a little further away, but probably much much cheaper.

I'd be more than happy to help you out! Just PM me.

I've done IMKY twice and had 2 different hotel experiences. 1st was the Days Inn on Arthur Street, which is about 5 miles from the race site. It was cheaper and a good experience overall, but the travel was a little frustrating. Probably comparable to staying on the other side of the river. 2nd I stayed at the Galt House, and other than the long wait for elevators, it was great being right there. My family wasn't a slave to my schedule like they were when we were so far away. The could go off on their own and I didn't have to worry about transportation. I would recommend staying as close as you can for that reason alone. It will alleviate a lot of stress. There are a few other hotels within a couple blocks of the race site that are cheaper than Galt, and probably just as convenient since you are within walking distance. Silly Sally can give you some tips on staying on the other side of the river, since that is where she stayed when she was down.

Please note that I have not done this or any other Ironman. So I probably don't know what I'm talking about.

Do you see where G is on the map?

to the right of that, you'll see 64, then 5a, then 5b

The little green section where the 5a is? That's the transition area

The D is right by the finish and also where you'll come through lap 2 of the run.

Scooby--I was hoping you would chime in! Even though you haven't done IMKY, you KNOW that area. Hopefully we can get a cheering section going again this year so we can cheer on friends that we've never met before.

Thanks everyone. That really helps out a lot. I think I might not worry about the cost and make it family friendly so everything is within walking distance.

I had no issues with traffic staying on the other side of the river and had rented a suite with a kitchen, great for making my own meals and having more time to relax. it was quite reasonably priced and they even had two computers in the lobby. How many will you be? They might have bigger suites with more than one bedroom or several beds at least. I know that the living room couch was a fold-out. Feel free to ask me any questions.

Thanks Sally. I will check into it. I am not sure how many people will be going with us yet. At least me and my wife, but the kids may choose to go and I know a few others from this area that are doing it. So we may pair up to lower the price. I just didn't want to wait too long and not get a good place to stay.

I made a reservation at the Hampton in downtown Louisville. 101 East Jefferson St. It should be in walking distance to transition and finish. That will be a plus for the wife if she is alone.

I'm just going to throw this out there, because I had a ball doing Ironman this way: Camping... When i did IMKY we camped in indiana at charlestown state park and it was fantastic, facilities are super clean and it's not crowded, any way if you like camping I'd highly recommend doing it for IM weekend. The other plus is you don't have to get used to the heat since you can't camp in a/c...

I would love to go camping. My problem is getting the wife around. It is much easier for her if she can just walk back and forth to from hotel.

I have to take care of DW. She is the one that talked me into doing an Ironman. I don't think I would be doing it if it wasn't for her. She is a great woman.

Scooby--how far is that from where we were? I know we were watching for LITer's heading into T2, then out of T2. We walked a short distance to cheer 'em on on the run, and were close enough that we could hear the finish. The whole area seemed very spectator friendly, with the exception of no POJ's!

That hotel is between the transition area, and the run lap 1/finish area.

Perfect spot for her to see you from swim to bike, grab a nap, see you from bike to run, grab some food, see some run, hang out, see the finish, etc.

you can send the wife to Seelbach. They do the most excellent job of pampering wives and transporting folk. Although she might not make it to watch you race, but you are certain to get a better thank you that way!
