So, we got daughter # 2 an iPhone last week (she paid for 3/4 of it), and, it's sort of acting funny.

So we went to the Apple store today at 10:05 (it opens at 10 AM), intending to go to the "Genius Bar", which, essentially, is where you go when you have a problem with your Apple product. There were 5 Geniuses at "the bar". We had to wait 1 hour.

What I found very interesting, is, aren't these Apple products supposed to work, flawlessly, all the time, every time?

If so, why is the Genius Bar so crowded? (oh, by the way, this is not the first time this has happened. Also, I have an idea why this is the case)

I have never owned an apple product so I can't speak for my experience with the Genius Bar. I do want an i-phone and an i-pad though.

No, I didn't have an appointment. But that really isn't the point of my question/comment.

I have only owned Mac products my whole life. I have been there for help only 3 times and one was an issue I caused to the computer. I have owned countless iPods (two Minis, 4 shuffles, 2 nanos), iPhones and so many computers over the years. I would though, never even think about going there without an appointment. For the most part Apple products are flawless and work 100% out of the box and generally have a longer lifespan than non-Apple products. We had an issue with our laptop that ended up being a recall and they fixed it right there in an hour or two. I was really impressed with that.

That hasn't really been my experience with Apple products. In general, I find that they perform no better, or worse, than other similarly priced products. Our family has had many an iPod replaced. More than 3, and we've only really had Apple products for maybe 5 years or so.

For me, since I've been so ingrained with the Windows style interface, at least on the computers, I don't really like the Apple interface, but that's not Apple's fault.

With the iPod, and espeiclaly iTunes on the PC, I REALLY don't like the interface. Again, though, that's personal preference.

There was a time that Apple products, particularly the software, was superior to the Wintel platform, but that time has passed. The deal is, with Apple, it's coming from one place and has to be "approved". With PCs, it can come from a lot of places, and, some of those places are actually the same places as Apple products, and, of course, some are not.

Thing is, I don't drink the Apple kool-aid. it's all marketing. I neither like their products or dislike them. If I need a job done, and a MAC will work better than a PC, then I'll use the MAC. And, also, I'm not about to toss hundreds, maybe thousands of dollars of software and hardware out the window. My daughter, who is a MAC head, and HAS nipped at the Apple teat, and doesn't (at the moment) have an open mind towards computers, wants a MAC bad. Well, she can have one when she goes to college. And I'll even buy one for her. However, she's going to have to live with one that's less powerful than her sister's Wintel computer because of the price, and will be on her own at that point. She'll have to buy all the overpriced software and hardware that comes with it. And she won't get support from Dad either. Not because I wouldn't want to, but because I wouldn't know how. But, maybe that's a good thing.

Also, one thing to note...I'm a tech guy, and can a) replace parts when needed in my PC, even build my own from scratch, something that's a little more difficult to do on a MAC, by design, and b) can fix software too..same thing

I swore swore swore I'd never get an iphone.

Then I had my husband's hand-me-down 3g which I used as an E-reader along with my BB. (I love re-purposing stuff. And an old iphone makes a great e-reader)

I decided two phones was ridiculous to carry so I switched to an iphone 4.

I have loved it.

As far as reliability? My BB and my iphone have all been excellent.

I did have a problem with shading on my iphone camera lens, it was replaced instantly, no questions asked.

I am not sure I'd have that same attention to detail from BB, but who knows.

My dad loves his hand-me-down BBs. lol

I love the competitive market; it keeps tech companies from resting on their laurels.

Yes, competition is a good thing.

I have a BB for work and, except for AT&T being a terrible network, I have never had a problem with it. I kinda like it.

As for Apple stuff, except for the $30/month I pay for data w/Verizon, I don't care if they have iPhones or not. If I ever decide to shell out the $30/month, I'd probably go Android, though. The Windows Phone interface is very nice (and I'm used to that because of my Zune), but unless more people start buying them, and more manufacturers and carriers start having them, I doubt I'd go that way.

As for the music player, I have a Zune, and love it. The rest of the family is firmly implanted with iPods and iPhones. As a matter of fact, DW's brand new iPhone JUST came to my office via FedEx this morning.

Mr Aire would love to give the Windows phone a go, but worries the platform isn't stable enough.
If I were you, I would replace that Zune soon. Because pretty soon (pretty zune?), the only way you be able to play stuff is on the Windows Phone.

Did you have a little one, or the touch screen?

Wow. That IS the big one. I had this one

8 GB. It was a touch smaller than an iPod. But it died. And before you Apple Heads start...it was, pretty much, because I didn't exactly take care of it. Nor did my kids. It had a cracked screen and dents all over it.

So, I ended up getting this one

16 GB. And I love it. But, soon, if not even now, it won't be available.

I've never used anything 'Apple.' But I've never had a desire to. I've always heard all the hype, but the cost was prohibitive to me and it just didnt seem worth it to me. My windows computer worked just fine, not to mention there were more software options out there.

As far as phones go, I had a BB, now have an android. I like to tweak things and customize. You cant do that with apple stuff. I have to say, I LOVE my Droid X. Its fun, I can change things up to my hearts desire, complicate it, or make it simple. Its fast, varied and reliable. Thats not to say that at times I havent wished it were an iphone, but thats only when I have screwed something up and need to figure out how to fix it.

As far as the phones go...there are tons of apps for the iphone, but I love the developer community for the android phones. Android is catching up fast.

Apple certainly has its strengths, but I think most of it its marketing is hype and I just dont buy it. I too, have heard LOTS of people saying they have had problems with apple products. I have to wonder if in the recent past they have taken advantage of their reputation to slack a bit on quality of their products. At least thats how it seems to me.

With regard to the software options. I, as a Windows guy, used to use that argument. Then an Apple Head friend of mine (hey, some of my best friends use Apples) said, so, there's 100,000 titles for Windows and maybe 10,000 for Apple. Isn't 10,000 enough? I sorta think he was right.

Like I mentioned before, I have a BB, and, it's "ok", but, nothing to write home about. Never used an Android, woudl like to try. An iPhone...well, playing with the one I just got my wife and daughter...the experience is supposed to be so "amazing". Well, I'm underwhelmed. I'm not saying it's bad, and I'm not saying I would never buy one, but, I'm not "wowed" by it. At all.

Those who are not "tech savvy" might be interested to know about the app business. There are definitely pros and cons on both sides. For Android...anyone can make an app and publish it (within reason). But, for Apple, well, it's a bit different. You make an app, and the Apple people test the hell out of it, and, quite possibly, reject it. What does this mean? Well, for one thing, it means that the app will work. But, there have been allegations that the Apple folks have rejected apps that are similar to apps that Apple is planning on releasing later on. For example, there was a Wifi sync app (which Microsoft already had on their machines, by the way) that some guy wrote. it got rejected for some reason. Then, a few months later, Apple came out with a Wifi sync app. Coincidence? maybe. Apple is a "closed system". It is a big debate in the tech world.

On the other hand, you have more diversity for Android, but, you can get an app that you've paid for, and it sucks, and doesn't work all the time, or, maybe, doesn't work at all. That doesn't usually happen with Apple stuff.

Does Apple take advantage of their past successes? Of course. Every company does. Does Apple stuff suck? No, of course not. Is Apple stuff better than other stuff? Well, that one is up for interpretation. If you're going by price? Well, is "you get what you pay for" a good argument? I don't think so. That's my opinion. If it were $50 more expensive, then yes. But, twice as more? No. Because it will eventually break anyway. Is, "it looks cool" a good argument? No. Is, "everyone else has one and it's the 'in' thing" a good argument? No.

What is a good argument, in my opinion is, "it works".

But, I don't think that they work any better than any other device.

Hey, my wife and kids all have Apple products. That's fine. That's what they want.

I'm sticking with whatever is good for me. And, at the moment, I have Zune, and a PC. I don't have a smartphone, so, that's not an issue. (except for the BB, that's for work, and, I gotta say, I would NOT buy one if it were for me alone)

LOL. I cant argue with the software comment. If 10k isnt enough, somethings wrong. Back in the day when I was looking at them, (and listening to my dad, who was a MAC guy) I didnt see a lot that interested me, but then again, it was a long time ago and I wasnt really interested enough to research it like I should have.

I am really more into my phone, then my computer. I'm aware that the apple app system is a closed system. But I gotta say... it sounds like maybe they manipulate it for their own benefit at time. Which I guess is ok, although possibly not always honest, as you pointed out. I have always heard it takes a lot longer to get apps approved then it does for android. Then again, as you said, they work as advertised. I know that lately there have been more and more spyware apps showing up on the android market, which isnt good. I am guessing they are going to have to do something to address that in the near future. Its sure not a good thing for users who arent tech savy. (which I include myself in) Although... I have had some fun rooting and rom'ing my phone which can be scary but a blast, all at the same time. :) Luckily I have found some android forums who are full of people who know how to 'unbrick' phones as needed and are very helpful. :)

I agree.... as long as it does what I need, I'm simply not willing to spend lots more money so I can say its an apple product. Heck.. my laptop still runs XP and it does everything I need it to do. (Although, I am jonesing bad for a galaxy nexus phone, but doubt I'm gonna get it. Oh well. )

So yeah.. I agree with everything you wrote.

I just got an iPhone last year. It was to replace my HTC Desire which I was never happy with - I had memory problems and short battery life. The HTC was to replace a blackberry that accidentally got wet.

I'm not a big iTunes fan, but I have to say this phone works and works well right out of the box. I had such high hopes for my Droid phone, but it didn't live up to it. I'm hearing good things about the new Microsoft phone platform. Maybe Nokia Windows phones will be the iPhone of the future?
