Good morning fellow runners!

I've known about this site for a little while now, and decided last night during my 7 mile run that I should finally introduce myself here...especially since so many of you will be at Philly, which will be my first Marathon.

A quick intro: My name is Don & I live in Connecticut (in case you couldn't tell ) and am a 32yo Stay At Home dad to my 2 kids (a 3.5 yr old son and 9mo old daughter). I reached my all time high in weight of 274lbs (I'm 6' 3" last spring, and decided that enough was enough.

I had dabbled in running before, but got frustrated when I petered out after a mile or so, but I wanted to get into it 'for real'. I signed up for the BAA Half Marathon, which gave me 7 months to train.

I fell in love with running as soon as I learned to slow down and was able to go 'longer' distances. I used HH's beginner program and doubled it up so I trained for 24 weeks. I ran the HM @ 242lbs and finished at 2:14:40, which was ahead of my goal time of 2:30.

Since then I have completed 2 more HMs (Nutmeg State in April and Boston's Run to Remember in May) and have 2 more on my plate: The BAA Half again and Hartford Half (plus an additional 5 miles) the following weekend to use as training runs for the Philadelphia Marathon.

Ok, so maybe it wasn't so much of a quick intro as it was my running history.

I'm using HH's Novice program as a) I didn't have a very big base when starting the training (15mpw) and b) I don't have any goals other than finishing. Other than missing one of the shorter runs each week, I haven't found any problems with the program and am really looking forward to running my first marathon.
Oh, and as far as weight goes, I checked in at 219 earlier this week. . It's still 4.5lbs over my all time low from about a month ago, but I'm still working off some vacation gains!

Thanks for letting me type all that out for you and I look forward to being an active member of this community here! Which I found, btw, from Liam's posting about the Philly Marathon over at Coolrunning.

Cheers!

That is so cool that you are a stay at home dad.

You're doing great with your running!

Hi, Don!

You are doing really well. That's an impressive time you have there I'll be doing the 1/2 in Hartford, too. I know some others here will be there as well.

Great job on the weight loss, too!

Welcome! You've done a great job on your weight loss and you also have some very good times at the HM distance! nice job! I have used HH's novice programs before too and generally have to tailor his program to my busy schedule. I can fit in three runs a week, but not usually 4, so I just use his programs as a guide, but tweak things here and there. and YAY for you on being a SAHD. My husband was the SAHD for our only son when I went back to work at 4 mos. It worked real well for our family and my husband absolutely loved being able to take care of our son.

Thank you everyone for the warm welcome and kudos!

I absolutely love being a SAHD, most of the time. It's downright awesome being able to play outside for 3 seasons of the year. We can get punchy when we're stuck inside in the wintertime though!

I have improved my time in all 3 HMs, but since the next two will be training runs I won't be 'racing' them but rather enjoying the day and atmosphere.

Or at least that's the plan...I said that for the Run To Remember and ended up getting in such a groove by mile 7 that I PRed even with stopping to wait for friends to catch up and mugging for some pictures with my wife and kids!

Connecticut runners are cool.

I remember you from the CR crowd, posting in the HM threads. Welcome to KR. The Nutmeg State HM was very close to my neck of the woods - some of my training routes come near the course.

Nice progress btw.

Welcome CTDon! You've made some great strides in your running and your weight, and you'll find a lot of supportive folks around here.

BTW, I started off in a very similar situation as your myself, in terms of weight, progression in HM times, and use of HH's programs. It sounds like you're well on your way to even more improvement as time goes on.

Hi Don! The folks here are so wonderful, friendly and supportive. I'm sure you will like it here a lot. There are a bunch of us who will be in Philly, I think there are around 35 of the 30-something crowd who will be there, plus others on the board. Anyway, congrats on the running, the weight loss and the awesome races you've had. Good luck in your upcoming HM's.

Welcome, CTDon! Congratulations on your weight loss and running accomplishments. That's no small thing for a SAHD...you must have very little time to call your own. Good luck on your upcoming first marathon.
