I have been so anxious about this race and the training and all the crap going on in work plus the wedding and all that. I decided to start with the 3:40 group (an 8:25 pace) and go as far as I could and just see what I would do. Well, each corral was brought to the start line and held 3 minutes to allow space....no one thought about the fact that we would be standing on the chip activator mats for three minutes. So, boom, we can go but we started way behind and I guess the pacers were trying to make up time? Because the first five miles were something like 7:35, 7:40, 7:45, 7:56, 7:55----waaaaaay to fast for me to start especially since the hills were huge. At mile 6 my HR was pumping and staying between 185-190 which is high even for my regularly fast HR. I knew at this point that whether I finished the marathon or not, it would end in a death march and no BQ. It wasn't worth it to have a death march. The mental game for me is getting harder and harder. I get so anxious and then I don't have fun. I turned off at mile seven onto the half marathon course and decided I would just get a 1/2 PR, even if I was the only one who knew about it. My HR slowed so much once the weight of the whole thing was off my shoulders. I ran a great, though VERY Hilly 6.1 more miles. I enjoyed the scenery and the people and I actually talked to people which I never do in a race. These hills were not like the ones I trained on and my black toenail and blistered toetips speak to that loud and clear--- I guess I need bigger shoes if I am going to run real hills??? I could feel my legs getting tired at mile 12 and I knew I made the right choice to pull off. It would have been a looooong, hurty day otherwise

I actually think that had I intended to run the half and had more even pacing I could have done even better but....

PR: 1:47:11

I was the sixth overall finisher of the marathon on the computer for a few hours....until I was officially DQ'ed. I have never been a cheater before The computer had my avg pace at 4:05/mile.... Ha! I had a great 1/2 marathon and I am definitely coming back next year to conquer this monster!!!! I will own this marathon next year....

As an aside, I got to meet some great PRTers and get inspired. I have been officially DQ'ed for years and.... it's not so bad.

Sounds like you had a great half, learned some things, and had fun.

So all in all, a good experience.

Maybe next time you'll run the full. Or not.

There's nothing wrong with being strictly a half marathoner.

That is my favorite distance.

Thanks Dan! It is my favorite distance, but a BQ is in the future!

The good part is that I now have a new PR to build my workout paces around....and Macmillan says it was the equivalent of a 3:46 marathon if I was trained for it...so I am inching closer! Maybe once Macmillan Calculator believes in me, I will too

It's too bad that things didn't work out like you hoped, but good for you for listening to your body and not forcing your way thru the whole marathon. Smart decision! You'll get your BQ before you know it. Keep up the hard work girl!

Congrats on the half marathon PR!

The half is my favorite distance too.

The Macmillan calculator is a helpful tool...of course it tells me that my 1/2 marathon time projects a 3:41 marathon for me, and that just makes me laugh!! I can't imagine running a marathon that fast!

Yeah, well it will be a while before I train for another marathon. I trained for Chicago and that was a giant disaster! (and I am not just talking about the race itself).

I'll just keep hacking away at my half time.

Great job Becca!!! I know exactly how you feel about this dang BQ barrier and the very tough and taxing mental stuff surrounding it. I'm in the same boat and am still working on what can help me deal the best. It's so hard to just let yourself run what you know deep in your heart, you can. I hope this sweet PR will boost your morale and help you along the process. You're a tough chick, you can do this! Great job on the HM!!!

I dont care that you didnt complete the full. Isnt running about having fun anyway and whats the point in doing something if you arent enjoying it? Your half time is smoking fast to my little brain. Someday I may be as fast as you (I hope!).

Way to go on your discipline to just do the half. I doubt I could ever do that!

As far as being DQed. Whatever... You didn't try to claim any hardware. You admit you did the half. One year at the start of the Columbus, I was talking with a woman who only wanted to do the half. She had signed up to do the full, but didn't get the training in, so just wanted to do the half. At the expo they wouldn't let her switch! So she ran the half with a full bib. Later there was a huge stink because she placed in the full and they claimed she cheated. No, she ran the half on a full bib!

I see no point in injuring myself just to finish a race that didn't go how I wanted and be out of training for weeks. In the end, I love training. It is what keeps me getting up every morning and ticking along. A race is not important to me, just the training. It was an easy decision

Smart move Becca. And on the BQ....don't stress it. Just wait till you are older and the BQ qualifying time goes down. You have a lot of other stuff on your plate as far as goals go.

It's great that you listened to your body and did the half! Too bad about the DQ. Great job on the PR, even if it becomes unofficial.

Some races are a little nicer about changing your mind. The CMM caps the half marathon but if you are willing to pay the higher price for the marathon, they let you cross the half marathon finish line - it's different than the full so yo don't mess up the results!

BTW - I do some work with the finish timing software - It is not an easy fix when someone cuts the course and then crosses the line with a chip that is expected to go 26.2. A DQ is the easiest way for them to fix it - they can just delete the record. It's much easier when there are different finish mats!

By the way - great report on the hills!
