<p>Today the company I work for announced in its daily email newsletter that certain kids of employees had won scholarships.  The scholarships are administered by a third party and are based on academic merit, a letter of reference and the volunteer history of each candidate.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>The obys each won one.  There were only 20 given out.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>I got a few congratulation notes from colleagues and my boss.  I also go this:</p>
<p> </p>
<p>"You should be ashamed of yourselfs, two! You rich and you take the place of kids who desserved it."</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Yeah.  Right.</p>

<p>It actually IS pocket change.  But every little bit helps them out along their way.  They called it the easiest money they had to work for - they just submitted a form along with their marks and a reference letter... and voila.  I told them that it hadn't been easy, they had to work for their marks.  "Oh... yeah...". </p>

<p>With two of my own in school I know exactly what you're going through.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>#1 graduated this spring with an honors (Deans list) degree in engineering, ninth in his class of 63 who graduated and of 110 who started with him 5 years ago, and the only one to take a math and physics option.  In spite of his success he was never quite good enough to earn any scholarship money, so Dear Dad had to cover his tuition and books, (Waterloo isn't cheap either....nor is McGill)  while he earned enough to pay his rent, food and necessities.  (beer!)  It wasn't easy, but it was worth every penny to help him follow his dream.  This fall he entered a PhD program in physics at U of T.  He actually has an office and gets a paycheque, but still needs to have his tuition paid because.....he applied for a sholarship but was not accepted.</p>

<p>Congratulations to your boys for all the hard work that led to this reward.  They deserve every scholarship they get and anyone who suggests otherwise is simply insecure, jealous and envious.</p>
