Woohoo, first post ever on this board

Ok, my question: In a Tri does EVERYONE swim crawl? I hate crawl, but I wouldn't want to look like a numpty (more than usual )

So is there usually a variety of strokes or is it all about the crawl?

The majority of swimmers freestyle/crawl, but newbies (like myself) are mor elikely to use various techniques and styles to get through the swim. So, are you thinking of doing a triathlon?

"Numpty" ... never heard that word before.

Maybe, possibly, perhaps in the distant future. I was curious.

adam,
If I were to ever get brave enough to enter a tri [sprint distance of 1/4mile swim], I would side-stroke, breaststroke, and backstroke.
~I'd prefer a snorkle and lifejacket, but I realize those aren't allowed~

I can barely stay afloat, much less swim like a real triathlete.

In my first tri (open water) I flipped out and couldn't put my face in the water. I did the side stroke, back stroke and breast stroke.

I have read about all different strokes in Tri reports that i have read. I think once you get in the water, if it is really crowded and/or choppy water you do whatever you can to get from point A to point B

My first tri I came in DFL on the swim...ha!

I did mostly crawl and invented some strokes. You may use a snorkel...
