We can balance the budget as well as stop all these insane short funding plans. And then both parties could take credit for cutting spending as well as balancing the budget. I know, I know, dream on.

As long as this guy doesn't get to Congress, there's a chance:

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) – A 91-year-old freshman lawmaker* who suggested the mentally disabled should be shipped to Siberia resigned Monday from the state House and said he was sorry that his "big mouth caused this furor."

Rep. Martin Harty's comments came to light last week during testimony at a hearing on proposed cuts to the state budget. He said he was kidding around with a female caller who supported funding for the homeless when he raised the issue of eugenics and the world's population growth.

Harty, a Republican from Barrington, said he didn't know what to do with mentally disturbed people and suggested renting a spot off Russia. He said the woman called him an Adolf Hitler and hung up.

"I was just getting the hang of it some, but with the slightly unfavorable publicity I've been getting the last few days, I'll never be an effective lawmaker," Harty said in his handwritten resignation letter.

Republican leaders quickly praised Harty for resigning.

* this is not a typo. The guy's 91 years old! To quote a repsonder to the story, "If this 91 year old guy was the Republican candidate, who was the Democrats candidate and how did he/she lose?"

Then How come we have these stupid stop gap measure instead of a real budget, and whyare only a tiny monority talking about real budget changes?

Why - because if you talk about significantly cutting Social Security or Medicare - the voters will toss you out on your ass. People only want to eliminate "waste, fraud and abuse" and somebody else's program (i.e. cuts that won't affect them).
