I just finished my first ultra a 60K at Land Between the Lakes on March 8th. I had a blast. The most fun that I have ever had running....six inches of snow and 37 miles and a sense of accomplishment.

A friend of mine that ran with me wants to run the Ice age trail 50 miler in May. Has anyone run this race? Tell me about it? How is the course? Is it too soon to run another ultra? I am still in recovery mode now

Thanks

Hey tconnor,
I will be doing my first 50 miler at Ice Age this May. I've heard many good things about this race. Over at runnersworld.com in the ultra section there is talk about Ice Age. There are a few very good replies as to the course and what to expect. You might want to check it out. Everyone I have talked to tells me I will love it!!! Hopefully I see you there!

If you have questions about the race go to above link

Then under Club Info

Then under Graffiti Board

Then under "Ice Age 50" this is the message board of the club that puts the race on. Or post it under "Badgerland Striders" message board as many of the members have run it multiple time. What I am told it is an awesome party afterward.

Hi,

I have no particular insight on the course, but thought I'd pipe in since I'll be there, too. Ice Age will be my first 50 miler. Then, I'll be back to the same area again 4 weeks later for my first 100K (Kettle Moraine). My first official ultra will be 4 weeks prior to Ice Age, at the Chippewa Moraine 50K.

You have plenty of time to recover from the 60K...should be no worries there.

I'm roughly familiar with the terrain in that area since I've been mountain biking on nearby trails many times. Lots of small steep hills. I expect to walk up the steep stuff, try not to fry my quads on the downhills, and just cruise the flats and see what happens

See you there!

I am now a maybe - I was off mostly between 9/1/07 - 3/3/08 lots of reasons. I am training to jog boston and this is 4 weeks later. Everything I have heard is this is a great 50 mile to do - Great party after, lots of aide stations and a decent amount of competitors.

I think this would be fun to just experience - take it slow and easy.

Maybe I will see you there

I think after you do trail mix you will see how easy an ultra can be if you race smart and within yourself and you will be ready for the 50M at ice age and 100k at KM next year -

The local get fit campaign is "Put down the cheeseburger" - I think of your double cheeseburger and beer thursdays every time.

If I dont Run Fans next year (12 hour) I might pace/crew... or run the 12 and still pace/crew.

I am really looking forward to 2009. Also looking at the Half voyager for next year and the 38 mile night run.

Now that is good to hear. Enjoy the day, the woods, the people. Time doesn't matter as long as you have fun. No doubt recovery is key to what you most likely hope to accomplish throughout the summer, etc. Good luck! cr

Flounder, I can hardly wait! Let the taper begin. I have already apologized to my staff in advance for my crankiness in the next two weeks. He he! This will be my first 50 miler and I'm just looking at enjoying myself. I ran my final long run with a good ultra friend of mine and was given a few last pointers. Is anyone going to the pasta feed the night before?? I will be there and would enjoy neeting some of you.
