Looks like I'm getting a little bit back this year. Phew!

This year I intend to file them as soon as all the forms arrive.

The annual "why do I procrastinate on my taxes?" thread will have to be started by someone else this year.

Anybody else worked out theirs yet?

Done as much as I can. Anxiously awaiting the state, federal, and local governments to send me 1098s and 1099s. Really annoys me how they get away with sending stuff late. All the private companies, schools, banks, etc. have already sent their stuff.

It's supposed to be delivered by 1/31 (or at least that's what I thought).

I'd be done by now if it werent' for them. Not that it would make any difference, because I read this year that the IRS is not going to start processing filings that have Schedule A in them until 2/14.

My husband usually does them with Turbo Tax.. BUT he is a procrastinator and usually is filing on April 14.... So since all the forms are in, I may start them myself this year.

Tech tee.. last year my W2 was very late from the local school district.. not sure why but I didn't get it till into February. ,, obviously it didn't matter in the end anyway... since DH waited.

WE usually get a few hundred back but we do not "save" via the US Government. I have it figured out so that they take just enough not extra so I never expect a huge refund.

We usually get back too, but this year due to DW's "real" job, we have to pay a small amount to the state this year. WRT to having the government "save" for you, and also giving the govt. an interest free loan.

I know absolutely that if I withheld less, I would spend the money almost immediately. And, also, let's be extreme, how about you get a $1000 refund. At 2 percent interest (if you put it in a bank), compounded, over a year. How much is that? Like $50? Is that really worth it managing it yourself?

I'm hoping for about the same as you muzicgrl

We have to get all of our forms by the end of February and have until April 30 to file them. I am so excited to get my T-4's and such. I won't be getting a whole lot back, but compared to last year when I pretty much signed over all of my savings, getting something back will be a very good thing.

I In the past couple of years, it isn't about saving it for something "special" for ua. We both work for towns.. so not much in the way of raises lately... I need the extra in my paycheck to use for gas and heating oil and other expenses.

I give my accountant the rather well organized box tommorow, he always comments wishing everyone was so organized, all categories sorted, amounts totaled. No way I do them myself my return last year I think was 30 pages. He charges me about 300 a bargain and has them done and mailed back to me in 2 days. I may get some back???? If so I file immediately, otherwise april 15th at midnight

I did my initial assessment last weekend. $12.00 back from the IRS and about $500.00 from the State. However, those figures are without my second mortgage interest being in there. I just received that document today so I'll redo them this weekend and see where I stand. I'm guessing about $300 or so back from the Federal and $700 from the State. For next year I'm trying to have it so I end up paying both the Federal and State about $200.00 each. But I am not paying to have them automatically deposited into my checking. I'll wait for the checks.

I've already put some things in place for my 2011 taxes so I don't get back quite so much. After I file these taxes I'm going to do an estimate using this year's turbo tax with my projected totals for 2011 and see how it looks and what further actions I need to take.

Does anyone know for real? Is there a law which states that organizations MUST deliver tax information to tax payers in a certain time?

I thought I had heard that it was 1/31, but that may have been anecdotal.

I still have not received my 1099-G from the crappy state government that is New Jersey.

I think the forms just have to be in the mail by Jan 31st. I'm not sure that they actually have to be delivered by the 31st.

That would make sense. But, I'm not holding my breath on the state doing that.

I love how some organizations lie. One time I received tax info from my township. It said it was mailed over a week previous. I seriously doubt that. The next year, it said it was mailed two days AFTER we received it. I wasn't aware that mail could go back in time.

Well I got a T4A for Wage Earner Protection Income when my retail job went bankrupt last year, that counts as income so my refund went down $100.00.

Have to laugh as that was the employer that refused to take extra tax off, eventually costing me $2400 to the government last tax season, so their bankruptcy just cost me another $100.00.

Oh well still a refund. Still waiting for the other income statements to confirm said refund.

Check on-line. After waiting and waiting and waiting for my 1099-G from the wonderful state of NJ, I went to their taxation website and found out that they are no longer sending them out through the mail.

Although I don't recall them telling me this, I don't doubt that they did. I mean, there are probably 100s of thousands or filers that got refunds. They would have to say something. It was probably in a piece of mail I read briefly and tossed out.

Also, on DWs Federally backed student loan, we didn't get a 1098 in the mail (but we did last year). We checked online, and there it was. Don't recall any communication on THAT one to me either.
