I have avoided bags on flights since 9/11 due to the hassle factor. Unfortunately I'm going on Delta early next month from ATL to Ft. Lauderdale for a cruise. I've figured how to get everything into one bag including my suit. So, now I'm simply trying to find out how much the fee is.

Can you simply call Delta? Yes, if you don't mind a 15 to 20 minute wait. And if you try to ask a simple question via their website you have to fill out all sorts of "mandatory" information, the most obscene of which is your "prefix" i.e. Dr., Mr. Ms. Rev or whatever. It should be none of their business but that's not an option. And the music they have while you are on hold is obnoxious and just generally sucks as much as Delta.

If the pharmaceutical firm I work at were as arrogant to our customers as Delta is, we wouldn't be in existence.

I'm so looking forward to Southwest Airlines coming in to Atlanta effective February, so my April flight to Houston will not include bag fees for my next cruise.

You do know, though, that Southwest essentially is a cattle car with wings.

And, you can't be fat. Or wear pants that are falling down. Or show your midriff. And, probably a whole other bunch of stuff that hasn't hit the news.

I can deal with the cattle car with wings. I've flown Southwest from Birmingham with no problems. And I love their customer service compared to Delta. I'm not fat nor do I wear baggy pants. But I think I figured out a way to avoid the Delta baggage fee.

I can fit everything into my carryon for the cruise except the suit. Delta does not consider a suitbag a "personal item". I'll just wear the darn thing and then change out of it once I'm on the ship.

My other fear with checking a bag on Delta is the flight is full for that Saturday morning. I have a healthy fear of Delta deciding to send my bag on a later flight. I simply don't trust Delta when it comes to baggage even if we are paying them for the service.

Southwest begins service from Atlanta in February so for my next cruise in April leaving out of Galveston, I'm already set to fly Southwest. And no baggage fees!

I have a Delta question... can I gate check a bag that is too big to be a carry on? Perhaps our resident Delta expert can provide some guidance. Richard?

IF it is a normal airplane (size wise), then if it fits carry-on it will go on. The gate check comes when it's a qualified carry on and the plane is too small or they are over booked.

If you have to take more than carry on- check it through (if it's a direct flight) and just allow for an extra 15 minute delay to get out of the airport

Pack light then - you probably won't need too many clothes anyway.

Ya gotta just learn how to pack! I can pack 6 days of clothes in a carry on bag! Work smart not hard! (good luck and safe travels!)

How big is a carry on, by the way?

I plan on taking a duffel bag and a back pack (book bag style, not big).

Can I walk on the plane with that, or do I need to check the duffel?

I think the maximum length is around 22 or 23 inches... duffel bag would be larger than that so I'm guessing you'll have to check it.

Believe me, it hurts to have the feelings I have towards Delta today. I grew up on Delta Airlines and they are almost as much an Atlanta institution as Coke and Georgia Tech. I ALWAYS chose Delta until within the last 10 years or so given a choice, even if the airfare was a little higher. Today unless you fly Delta enough for Medallion or Elite status of some sort, they could care less about customers. I was actually hoping when Delta and Northwest merged that Delta would move its HQ to Minneapolis. Delta has simply forgotten its Monroe, Louisiana and Atlanta roots.
I've been a faithful Delta passenger for about 8 years now - I still have status but have dropped a level each year for the last 2 - I'll be silver next year. That being said, I saw the change in service after the merger with Northwest. I was told that Northwest was known as "NorthWORST" - and now I'm beginning to think that's the case with Delta

Now, I only fly when I absolutely have to and just suffer through the experience.. which is really sad.

For about a year, I had to fly down to Atlanta every Monday morning, and fly home every Friday afternoon.

I was almost exclusively Delta (with the occasional Eastern) . Eastern was the pits. Delta was always awesome. I even flew Delta to Japan and Europe sometimes.

Now, I'm not so sure.

Boy, those were the days. I could leave the Peachtree Plaza 45 minutes before my flight, drop off the rental, and run through the airport at top speed, and still make the flight.

That wouldn't happen now. It would take 45 minutes just to get through security.

I remember one time going through security, asking an agent, then taking off. And I heard the agent yell, "We've got a runner!" I presume she called the gate to tell them I was on my way, because I was the last one on the plane. Well, that happened a few times.

I'm going to miss Air Tran, but I hope Southwest will battle Delta on the routes I generally travel (mostly BUF-ATL). Early Tuesday mornings I get on the puter and see how much the fares have gone down overnight on Air Tran. If that fare lasts through the day Delta will match it. Delta has more flights than Air Tran on the route so I have to sometimes fly on them, but they are always my second choice.

GF has Gold Medallion status...or something like that. I haven't found anything particularly wonderful in the Skyclubs and frankly I'd rather people watch down in the general population.

Funny thing is that I just booked Delta to San Antonio in December before I came on here.

I'm also losing my Frontier virginity this weekend, but I've heard generally good things. At the very least they're cheap!

They're cheap and they're clean. And pretty comfortable as well.
