...but I swam 150 meters last night....3x. of course everyone else finished up with 4x200 or 3x200.

The other peeps are so wonderful. I know if they weren't so encouraging, i couldn't do it. I still have thoughts of getting out of the pool and quitting.

Nothing is laughable. We all were beginners -- at everything -- at one point! Some of us still are!

Congrats! And I definitely don't laugh at anything that anyone cranks out in the pool. I was just so hopeless at swimming as late as last year, where I could barely cover the width of a pool with a damn kickboard. Keep up the work...it may not seem like it, but it will come with time

Give yourself a break. As lean as you are, you probably sink faster than the proverbial rock. It turns out that swimming efficiently requires a lot of practice. Running is much more intuitive. Stick with it for a while and be patient with yourself.

Just so you know, a year ago I could barely swim a full lap. Today I completed my longest swim ever: 1000 meters. Just keep plugging away, I always say.

Well... first off, let me say I am not a fast swimmer.

So take this with a grain of salt.

If you can find a good coach/instructor who is used to teaching adults, take a couple lessons. You might as well be doing it right. I took a lesson a couple years ago with a kid who teaches little kids and it didn't really help at all. I took a lesson this summer with a Total Immersion coach, and even after one lesson it helped. I plan to take more with him. I may actually do a clinic next summer.

But if you can't get a lesson, just get in the water and start swimming if you already know how. Swimming endurance (for me) is totally different from running or biking. The breathing is challenging since you can't just breathe when you want to. You have to time it with your stroke. Good luck HH. Swimming is a fantastic workout. And it's SO easy on your body, no impact and all.

Oh, and swimming efficiently entails keeping your body floating as close towards the top of the water as possible, rolling a little with each stroke, and taking long strokes. K had some great advice earlier this summer on it and it really helped me to kind of visualize what he said about staying towards the top of the water and taking long strokes. Like, your arm should not come out of the water much before it reaches your thigh... if that make sense.

When I first started I couldn't do 25 without snorting water. I say you're doing GREAT!

Hubby thought for me to get better I needed to practice MORE. I said Shit no. My tri friends say it's all about technique.

A year later I went from last place at my first sprint tri in the swim to:

4th in my AG
2nd in Athena

I did relay-so I technically didn't compete against them...but still-lessons.
